How long till you gain?

I am a 42-year-old male in very good shape. I exercise
daily and I watch what I eat.

I actually joined this forum to find out the answer to a
very basic question. I hope someone has a definitive answer.

When a person generally eats well but binges one day a week,
how long does it take until weight is gained?

In other words, if there's a particular day I go out of control
and eat a HUGE meal with lots of pasta or perhaps a dessert
I don't normally eat, will the weight show up the next day or
in a few days?

How long does it take the average body to show the damage
caused by a day of unhealthy eating?

Thanks in advance for the answers.

i understand you would like a definitive answer, but thats going to be nearly impossible to give since there are so many factors that come into play. it would depend on how much exercise you normally do, how much water you usually drink, and how much sodium that meal contained. would also depend on what time that meal was eaten. in MY personal experience, if the example you gave happens to me the weight shows up the next day but will be gone in the next 2 or 3 days following that once i get back on track.

but i am a little confused because at first you say one meal then later on in your post you say one DAY of unhealthy eating.

Thanks for the reply.

To clarify, the one meal would generally be a day
of unhealthy eating.

I know it's a tough question to answer as so many
variables come into play, but your answer does fall
in line with mine. If I eat bad, I usually notice it the
next day.

Just wondering if most others did too.

Technically speaking, it takes excess of 3500 calories that your body does not use to store a 1 lb of fat. It is hard to eat that many calories in one day. But, if you're eating in excess of 1000 calories those "excessive" days, that it would take 3-4 days to gain a 1 lb of fat.

The extra weight we notice the next day is probably mostly water retention and the weight of food before it got all broken down and turned into energy(or subsequently formed into fat).
