How I lost 40 pounds using a Pedometer

I've been having weight issues since I was a teenager, and have tried a lot of different diets, pills, and exercise programs.
Recently I lost over 40 pounds and wanted to share how I did it with everyone.
From my research I believe that my weight issue was from a lack of activity vs over eating.
I'm rather motionless when working at the office and going to the gym just wasn't for me.

I read somewhere that based on a 2000 calorie diet we should be taking about 10,000 steps a day.
For the first week I measured my steps and only averaged about 3000 - 5000 steps a day less than half the recommended.

So my new plan was to reach 10,000 steps a day, some days I really can't manage it, if I’m required to work at the office so I try to have a combined 70,000 steps a week.
I try to get in 2,000 steps before lunchtime
If I'm under I will pick a further place to buy food.
And Over 5,000 by time I leave work.
If I am under It gives me a reason to clean up the house or pick up groceries.
I tend to shop more often now instead of buying large quantities of all at once.
In all I haven't given up much other than pacing around the house when I’m watching TV instead of sitting on the couch

I've noticed that I've been volunteering to do the little things more, such as grabbing the napkins for everyone or delivering messages to my co-workers desk; instead of waiting for them to walk by, just to get a couple of extra steps in throughout the day

The first month I lost 15 pounds
I was really motivated so i tried adding 12,000 steps instead 10,000
It was definitely harder to keep up so went back to 10,000 after two weeks

I'm in my 5th month now, and in total I have lost 40 pounds, however it seems I'm not losing it as fast as the first two months. However, I have sub-consciously changed a lot of my old habits, so it’s basically effortless now.

So basically the plan is to walk 10,000 steps a day or 70,000 a week if you rather do more on the weekends.

A pedometer costs about $15 - $20,
I ordered my first one from Amazon because the local sports store didn't have any.

Good idea!

They also have them at the Dollar Tree. I picked up 3 for $3 the week before last, so I can keep one in my car, one in my purse, and one at home, so no excuses.

Now I just need to clip it on and do it.

Congrats on the loss!

Congrats on the loss!!! I have had one for awhile and try to use it everyday. I like it best when I have to walk my kids to school as I can get in 15000 to 20000 a day ( I know crazy). Like you I have lost some weight (not a much as you) and now have to do other workouts to keep going to where I want to be!.
Congrats again! keep it up!

question about the pedometor i have one and i have tried several. however when i use then it put more steps then i make i have tried it on my shoe and my sock and on my the waist band of my pants . any suggestions would be grateful.

"Test your unit for accuracy by wearing it (fastened onto one side of your waist) then doing 100 steps of walking. Your pedometer must be 85 percent accurate, registering between 85-115 steps; if not, try moving it unto another side or portion of the body then test it again until such time that you will find out the best location for it." Also take in to account things like useing the washroom and if you hit it be accident. Hope this helps was the best I could find. Also check your stride length that might be a factor to.

I found that one of my pedometers was counting 2 steps for every 1 step when I tested it, it was a cheapy from the dollar tree.

So what I do is divide the total by half when I want to know how far I've gone.

I did find the better quality pedometers are more accurate. I got one from weight watchers that was really good.

I always seem to break the clasp tho when I sit down with them on. Doh!

I've actually not counted the actual steps I took and compared it to the readings. But i'll try it this weekend and see how accurate they are.
