How does one train like an athlete?

I want to know what it takes to train like a world class athlete? Basically I do not want to exercise like a "regular exerciser". I want to push my self to higher limits. Currently I am a little overweight I am 5'5 160lbs but I go to the gym 4-5 days a week sometimes 3. I basically do 30 minuet workouts on the machines and I lift a little. This seems like typical regular exercise for the regular exerciser.

I was thinking how I could actually push myself to the limits as an athlete? Like for instance recently I have been doing 20 mins on the elliptical then 20 mins on the treadmill. That doesn't seem good enough. I am also a vegetarian but I get a good amount of calories like 1500-2000 daily. I workout 4-5 and sometimes 3 days a week.

Should I up this to 6 days a week rest seven? Go to the gym before work then after work? Also it is said doing the same exercise won't help you lose weight but if you are running on a treadmill burning up calories how is that possible since calories are being burned? I just want to train hard and I want to run faster and longer as well like a track running athlete.

The calories burned exercising are far less than what you can achieve with a healthy diet.

That said, don't over do it. You will see minimal results. If you just want to be in peak condition its one thing, if your goal is solely weight loss through exercise, I recommend looking into your calorie intake.

Shit, I didn't want to have to get into this, but having clicked on it, I'm now morally obligated to protect you from people like Jeff.

For starters, Download Westside for Skinny Bastards Part III (right click this link and save target) and follow it religiously. Cardio on off-days only, for now. Which will likely be Wednesday, Saturday, Sunday. No more machines (mostly).

If you want to train your run, make your cardio running on the track. Sign up for a half-marathon, and I'll provide you with a training guide, if you like.

As for everything else you mentioned, it's so dumb I'm not even going to explain why. Oh, and eat clean as per The 7 Habits of Highly Effective Nutrition. Google it. Live it.

Stick with clean eating and westside for 3 months (while, optionally, training for the half-marathon). Well? Why are you still here!?

btw just a side note here im a girl so that should clear up something about me

Irrelevant, unless you want to thank me with noodz. Which would be wholly appropriate, given the amazing sagacity I have evidenced (and perhaps even transmitted?) here.

But, y'know. It's not expected or anything.

maybe that was my misunderstanding I really thought it was a guy thing when it came down to working out... but yes it was helpful

so you get your nodz 4 help ^_^

I'm checking out those links, thanks Focus :)

I want to PROVE to everyone I know, including my boyfriend, that I WON'T become the hulk, I will look sexy :)

Exactly! I think its funny how so many people, especially women think they can just turn ripped hulk like in a matter of days. It takes years to build a super strong muscular physique. Even then, women don't have the ammount of testosterone in their system naturally to get that way.

olympic athletes train for 8-10 HOURS a day, 6x/week, and are under a specialize (sports) doctor's monitor 7x/week. what and when they eat is also highly regulated and watched. are you really prepared for this regiment - mentally AND physically?

one more tip: these athletes didn't just wake up one morning and start off w/this highly intense routine. it took years.

wishing you all the best!
:)
