How do you keep from being depressed?

:waving:Hi there
Sorry you've been having such a hard time. I have two suggestions:
1. Start reading some inspirational literature on how you can change your life (eg. The Success Principles by J. Canfield, etc.).
2. Make sure you are getting enough vitamin D and enough B vitamins. I take 1,000 units of vitamin D on a daily basis, and 1 or 2 B6 to help combat stress.

Best wishes on your journey! If you believe you can do it, and you are willing to put in the effort, there will be no stopping you!:biggrinjester:

Is this person on the forum any longer - I see the previous posts were from Arpil of 08. Regardless, I think you guys gave some really great advice that we can all take advantage of on our 'off' days :)

Also, 1 oz of protein is equal to 30 grams (approximately). If you eat a chicken (recommended portion size of 4 oz) you have already consumed 120 grams of protein! You eat that string cheese, and you've probably reached your goal protein.

What kind of chicken are you people eating?! I eat 4+ ounces of chicken in a meal several times a week and it's 23 grams of protein! I eat boneless, skinless chicken breast...is there something better?

:banghead:

I was just counting the whole chicken weight -- not going down to the protein content in chicken.

I assumed that the OP -- based on what she wrote and how I read it -- that she's not eating enough protein, but not at the nutrient level, at the quantity level.

So, the chicken weighs 120 grams, maybe it's not 120 grams of pure protein.

Kathar, there's nothing wrong with venting. You may be over thinking the foods a little though. Try going back to basics for awhile. Cut out what isn't natural and see where it takes you.

Gracie, Susan has some really good work out dvd's and a couple of motivational dvd's if you're interested. You can buy them together and she'll also sell them to you separately.

Hey Kathar

Sorry you were feeling depressed. I've been suicidally depressed too. I am also 5 2 tall and so even being a little overweight shows terribly. At the moment I'm like a ball. l am reading The Butterfly Plan by Leda Fox..it talks about balance and I think that's what I need. It's also a very funny read...a bit like that woman Susan Powter...I'm so obsessed with what I put in my mouth and I think the stress of that is screwing with my metabolism...I feel like my depression is also making me fat...my relationships have suffered,,,It's good that you are talking about how you feel though. That's what's great about these forums...cause we all understand...it's really hard to open up to people without a weight problem...I was good all day yesterday but went out to dinner and blew it...I make so many crappy excuses...I was stressed because my son is in Thailand and there's all that drama there so I had to pig out! I have to start taking a bit more responsibility and stop blaming everything except myself.

Cheers
gracie

You can try adding a protein shake to your diet, which makes reaching your protein quota much easier imo.
As for feeling depressed, I think that if you stick with this diet & exercise thing and start seeing results it will eventually go away because then you see how much all the hard work has paid off.
Do you follow a specific diet or just count calories?
Also, to see the exact amount of calories you need in a day, I suggest calculating your bmr.
You see, not just eating too much can halt your weight-loss process, but eating too little can do so as well as your body will start storing everything as reserves because it goes into starving mode.
I found this calculator very useful to calculate mine
And if you hate HIIT so much and if it makes you feel like throwing up, it probably isn't the right thing for you.
There are many other exercises you can try, I myself don't go to a gym cause I can't afford to, so I use dvds and the Wii and find them very fun to do, perhaps you can give a dvd a try?
I also agree, walking, cleaning the house, dancing around, just any kind of movement = exercise, it does burn calories, maybe not as much as HIIT but that's okay.

I agree with what a lot of previous posters have said. This doesn't need to be torture. My average day of food consists of muesli (that has dried fruit in it) and yoghurt for breakfast, some kind of sandwich/wrap/salad for lunch, and dinner varies, but is usually around 400 - 600 calories (I get 1900 calories a day). I eat snack bars, I eat heaps of dried fruits, I eat processed food all the time. I don't care about protein amounts, or what kind of sugars or fats I'm getting in. As long as its within my calories that is awesome for now. One day I might start to worry about the nutritional value, but in the meantime nothing is 'off limits'.

I do very little exercise, but my exercise goal at the moment is to just do 5 minutes every day. The other day my 5 minutes was parking further away from the doctors surgery and walking. I didn't sweat, I wasn't out of breath, I just did it at a comfortable pace. Today my exercise is jumping on the Wii Fit and having a bit of fun for 5 or 10 minutes. Eventually I will work up to maybe half an hour to 45 minutes of exercise, but trust me, its not gonna be something I hate or something that makes me want to vomit. Swimming for me is something I enjoy, and I've done a couple of classes at my gym that I enjoyed too. It doesn't have to be at the gym either. Take a scenic bike ride around your neighbourhood, take the stairs instead of the lift (maybe just for one flight at first). It doesn't need to be hard or even structured. Just move a little bit more!

It's only hard if you make it hard.
