how do I avoid overtraining

I am about to start training again in august. I am amped and ready to go. My question is...How do I avoid overtraining? that is one thing that I am worried about. Also what are some of the symptoms of overtraing? I will be working out for no longer than 30-40 mins-5 days a week. I just want to make sure that I make as much progress as possible. thanx.

sleep well, eat well and stay hydrated. if you find your performance is slipping from one workout to the next, give yourself more time to recover, that's generally a good indicator. also if you find yourself tired or not motivated at the beginning of your workout that could be another signal

i agree. back in may i began gearing up for twice a day workouts, before work and after work. i finished up in great shape, lost an inch and a quarter off my waist and nothing off my muscles. :)

i was in bed at a certain time, i made sure i got my rest. i didnt miss a meal and i paid attention to how i felt. sometimes if needed i would take the day off if i felt i was pushing it.

a good thing to try is to find out how much makes u sore the next day and make sure that u dont do that much the next day , just cut it back untill u feel your muscles are only sore enough to suggest to your body that it needs to put on muscle... after a few weeks that same workout routine isnt making u sore in the slightest u might wanna take it up a notch , ya gotta always keep pushing the boundries but never over do it , and sleep... make sure u get heaps of that if your gonna work out hard
