How did you become overweight?

I was just curious about how other people became overweight. Was it due to poor diet? Injury? Pregnancy? Etc.

For me it was the poor decision to indulge in Haagen Daz vanilla milk shakes with half a banana blended in and Cold Stone icecream while I was pregnant...

fast food, beer, wings, and no motivation or exercise WHAT SO EVER..

basically a typical lazy american life!

I was always big..But I have Extra large bone structure ..I love lifting and doing Cardio,,My problem was,,The Cardio would keep me steady with my Body Fat,Because I have no self control when it comes to food..May 3rd I herniated a Disk and had severe Sciatica,I went from 307 to 337 Quicker than the speed of light, without being able to do cardio..went from a 38" waist to a 42-44...

I'm just plain tierd of it,,I still have the injury,But will be doing some major cardio starting next week...When I get to my Goal weight of 240-250 I will then hopefully be better with my back and start doing some modified heavy lifting again to get my High scool physique back (my long term goal)...

250-240 ,By the Arnold in 08..My First Goal

well i was never really 'overweight' as a younger me, when i moved out at 17 i lived in uni halls of residence and spent most of my money on going out and shopping and ate little, as a result i lost alot of weight. Eventually i started eating right and got back to my normal-ish 130 weight.

When i moved to London at 19 i started drinking alot more and would often go out for dinner with work with the 'execs" drinking champagne and gorging on yummy FREE food. By the time i left London i weighed about 170lbs.

Then came the move to America. This is where i gained most of my weight and hit my highest 219lb weigh in. I am VERY sedentary over here, i don't have a car, we don't live near anywhere really so i just cant get out the house much. I used to trampoline all the time and compete nationally which kept me in shape , but that sport is'nt big in the states so i had to stop. Basically i was eating what i always ate, add on some doughnuts and yummy American foods and not having hardly any exercise so gained weight quickly.

So in conclusion, i went from eating OK-ish and exercising alot to stuffing all kinds of stuff in my mouth and not exercising AT ALL (other than some...bedtime activities ;) ...) ... so there u have it.

Having now tried all the American foods that were new to me, and being knuckled down into a healthier lifestyle i think im on the right path to looking like what i used to :)

I blame my de facto. I went up about five kilograms since meeting him. Once we moved in together, and I started eating regularly, eating a lot of meat and drinking more (I used to just buzz off on the computer and not notice hours pass), I put on an additional ten kilograms.

Wow..what a deep question. It really makes you think...it makes me realize that no one is to blame but myself. Yikes...reality check is definitely taking place here....

How I got fat. Well. Cool Ranch Doritos, cookies, ice cream, big fat cheeseburgers, Chicken McNuggets, French fries, fried food in general, chocolate, potato chips, desserts, puberty, pizza, high school, college, cakes, beer, frat parties, "Skippies", fattening delicious Greek food, chocolate, living on my own on a budget that bought crap you just add water to and cook, laziness, chocolate, good TV shows, American Idol parties, genetics...and oh yeah, pregnancy.

Did I forget anything? Probably.

hehe thats awesome. i love your honesty. I used to drool when i saw those foods, now most of them make me feel ill. Its great feeling in control of my cravings :D

I was always a little chunky- but I think my fast food eating, not going out, and video games did it=] All my choices though. I have no one to blame but myself.

Stress!!! Flatmates, uni, moving in with my bf AND his brother, grandpa dying, having our lease run out over christmas, being pregnant (the ONLY thing that stopped morning sickness was egg and bacon rolls)....

BUt since i've had the baby I am losing weight. I feel like eating better, I feel like exercising, I don't have time to binge and I use cooking as a break from everything.

It may seem like I'm blaming other things in my life - but I know it was my fault and now I'm doing something about it!

umm theres only one way to get fat ... eating more calories than you're using em :)

i guess i ate to much and exercised to little .. mostly the former.

Also i blamed being pregnant (which of course i know now does NOT make you fat .. all that eating for two does!), amoung other 'sore knees' and 'metabolism problems' and probably a few 'old xxx injury' type bullshit problems :)

Basicly, lieing and kidding myself, much like most people. :D

Actually being pregnant can indeed make you overweight, depending on the person. My sister has always been a size 0-4, naturally, without any dieting or ANY exercise (the lucky B). She gained 70 pounds when pregnant and it took a year before all that weight came down.

Same thing happened to me when I became pregnant. I'm the opposite of my sister though, I've always had to watch what I eat and exercise a lot just to keep between sizes 6-10. When I was pregnant, I was nauseous 24-7 for about 3 months. Only thing that made me feel better were simple carbs like bagels or some ice cream. I just couldn't be worrying about what I was eating because I was just trying to get rid of the nausea. Then came the feet, hip and joint pains so that I couldn't walk or exercise. I tried but would have to turn back from the pains. My stomach got so big toward the middle of my term that I literally had trouble walking down the street. So H started driving and picking me up from work while normally I walk about 1 mile each way plus you have to take a bunch of hard ass stairs (3 sets) in the subway. Add to that a much increased appetite (I was feeling hungry all the time!) and I put on 60 lbs.

I had gained the first 10 pounds before I got prego though, and that was from drinking, eating some bad foods with skinny H and not exercising because we were always doing things together. The difference is normally I would always take off that 10 pounds before it got out of hand. However, once I was pregnant, there was no way I could get that off. Now I'm back to my pre-preg weight and making a largely futile effort to get those last 10 off (not to mention it was so much harder than I thought to get that pregnancy weight off).

life on the road for 15 years... and 15 years of "healthy looking" restaurant dinners... for 15 years my rules were no fried foods, no fast food, no casseroles, no cream sauces... unfortunately 4 skim milk vente lattes a day, still is a lot of calories.

plus working 16 hours a day left little time for anything else -the only exercise I got was walking between gates in the airport and theonly strength training I got was lugging 2 computers and a projector and a suitcase between those gates.

Umm, no, i very much doubt you can gain massive amounts like that during pregnancy without overeating. Its science/math. Its not mumbo jumbo.
The metabolism may slow down some (though i doubt it), i think more than likely your sister ate differently because she was pregnant.

I've heard people joke that when they're pregnant they're eating for two - what they seem to forget that it's not two linebackers they're eating for...

That's exactly my point, the underlying reason my sister was eating more was BECAUSE of the pregnancy since she normally does not eat like that. As for me, I was eating more because I was constantly hungry and had a taste for sweet or "easy" foods to ease my nausea. I also couldn't work out anymore for various pregnancy related reasons. I never blamed this on metabolism at all, but definitely on pregnancy in increasing one's appetite and often in limiting one's physical activity. So consequently I believe that pregnancy can legitimately cause weight gain. Now as for these current last 10 lbs, those are definitely all on me .

It started out with me just loving the taste of fattening foods way too much like as Jeremy mentioned fast food.

In my case specifically Mcdonalds and Arby's but moreso than restaurants I just ate too much in general and Coke was basically my sole source of hydration each day.

As I got older and I would lose a lot of weight and gain it back what kept it on was negative thoughts that I didn't deserve to be healthy and happy as well as thinking this journey is too overwhelming to complete.

In the course of my weight loss over the years I've lost 70lbs, 80lbs and the last major run before joining this forum was last year and I was able to lose 40lbs.

I knew that I was only supposed to be increasing my calories by a few hundred a day, yet I felt like such shit much of the time that I just didn't care about the calories and I just found myself having such little control. Also, my hunger pangs were even greater than usual (I have a large appetite to begin with) and my level of control decreased. Its hard to know how it feels unless you've been there, and even then each person has a different experience, even from different pregnancies. I sure have a lot more sympathy for pregnant women now..

I was big all of my life. Then when I was 18 I lost 80lbs and was down to 150lbs. Which was pretty good for my height which is 5'10". Then my Mom got really really sick and stayed that way for a year.. she actually still is sick. My life just got bad, fast. I never had time to workout or cook healthy. My whole life was taking care of her. So.. that's what happened. :(

Most of it probably is my fault. But I was too scared to even leave her alone for 30 minutes.
