How certain foods at restaurants can be deceiving....

So, while deciding what I wanted to eat tonight I decided to look up the nutritional information at various places. I don't know if you have heard of claim jumper, but it is notoriously infamous for it's huge portions and delicious entrees. So, I decide to see how many calories a simple salad has...

Chicken Caesar Salad (Blackened)

Total Calories 1335
Saturated Fat (g) 23
Cholesterol (mg) 190
Sodium (mg) 2902
Total Carbs (g) 57
Fiber (g) 6
Protein (g) 78

1,335 calories for a SALAD!? I even their "organic spinach salad" has about 1,200 calories. This goes for many places, Olive Garden, Chili's, etc... I think many people believe certain things are better to order... and in comparison to the "Chocolate Motherload Cake" that has a whopping 2,723 calories, the salad's don't look all too bad. I guess this is just to have people beware, if at all possible before you go to eat somewhere look up just what you plan on eating and make sure it falls in your calorie range you would like to stick to.

Yes, and the sodium is ridiculous! Almost 3000 mgs... double what is recommended daily for the max....

I think it's either Applebees or Chilis has a healthy menu with some legit dishes under 700 calories. Sodium and fat are also a reasonable level (for a place like those).

I know Applebee's does. I've had a few things off that menu and they are pretty good. Full of flavor and low-ish (for a restaurant) calories.

I love Famous Dave's, but after looking up the nutritional info... I can't eat there any more. :p

Yeah, it is nice when restaurants offer low cal dishes, well I mean 700 calories isn't really "low-cal" to someone who can only have 1,400 calories a day, but it is much better than 1,300 for a salad. Haha! For 1,300 calories I could go to Fuddruckers and have a 1/3 lb burger w/ bun and fries! Sounds much more satisfying than an over drenched salad to me!

This is where I am glad I
1. have no money to eat out
2. have no person to ask me out for a meal
3. have such a mind which fixates on calories to the extent most foods scare me before I've even looked at the packet!

Its scary such places can hand you over what could be your entire calorie intake for the day on a single plate. They should at least give a warning- I'd bet most people never really know this and then feel confused and self hatred for all the extra cups of tea they had during the week- not noticing that actually it was the one plate of lettuce (and dressing) they had while they waited for their main course....

Yeah, kinda crappy :/ But, no one would eat there if they knew how much they were eating. I honestly had to search high and low for the nutrition page.... I mean when someone eats at mcdonalds, they understand it is not healthy, but I know not many people order a salad and expect to be eating more than half their daily calories...

Sadly, I know people who didn't know McDonalds was bad until I told them. They grew up in families that never questioned nutrition, families that never made health an issue. Needless to say they didn't believe me at first. They do now but their taste is so fine tuned to crap food they can't eat an orange or banana like I can. They dont like the taste. Its sad and hopeless at the same time.

Which is why it is even more ridiculous that salads can be the same, if not more, calories than ordering McDonalds.

That's why the salad has so many calories. It's not the contents of the salad that gives it so many calories; it's the portion size.

I hate when I go out to dinner and the girls I'm with order salads instead of what they really want just because they think it is better for them. How can you look at lettuce covered in fat and think diet food?

Really? No double entendre jokes or sly sexual references for this thread?

Your losing your touch.

Cause bunnies eat lettuce and stay trim =D (since lettuce is considered rabbit food by some) naw I guess people just assume its better then eating meat slathered in butter or something.

and a thread without sexual references or entrendre jokes are actually welcome for those of us who like reading serious threads that dont end in someone talking about sex or sexual references all the time. keep it for the off topic forum and journals.

Here in Spain the calories are printed on the packets that the food is served in and the paper that covers the trays is a complete calorie chart of all the food that they serve.
