I just don’t understand how can I gain 7 pounds in 1 day???? Is this real????? I weighed 165 yesterday and Today Boooom!!!! 172.:eek2:

This is the Story. Yesterday was my Wife’s Birthday. I broke my Diet eating at Red Lobster and a Medium sized piece of chocolate cake and everything. I ate probably 2800+ calories yesterday. ( I usually eat around 1500 a day)

We all know that 3,500 calories make a pound of fat. Then how in hell did I gain 7 pounds yesterday? This really sucks……. :flame: I used the same scale, at the same time of the day……

Sorry about the rant ,but, Does somebody have an explanation?

it could be sodium causing water retention...

your weight fluctuates on a daily basis -that's one of the downfalls of weighing in daily - pick one day a week and use that as your base number

its entirely possibe that the lower number was lower than usual - which is why, in my opinion, it's better to pick once a week as recorded weigh in...

It must be water retention; dont worry you will be fine.

P.S: Good thing you mentioned it was your wife's b'day else I would have said may be it is PMS :rotflmao:

I didn't know that the body can retain so much water.... and why does the body retain water anyways....

I have gained 5-6 lbs in 1 day and night before and it was probally do to sodium which makes ya retain water It willbe gone as quick as it came,GL Tammy

Yeah, I understand but does somebody know Why the body retains so much water??????

I've gained as much as 8 lbs in 1 day. If I have really salty, spicy food, I usually gain quite a few pounds the next day. Don't worry, in 2 days all that weight will be gone.

Weighing yourself every day is not a good indicator if you have lost actual body fat. You should weigh yourself once a week in the same conditions, or something like that.

Your body can go up and down about 5lbs a day with food and water. You could also be constipated or retaining fluid.

It may not be just water weight. Not all of that food is fully digested by the very next morning, that food weighs something too. I think all of us have experienced a large rise in the scale a day after a really bad meal.

I find it more useful to weigh every single day because then I become aware of my body's fluctuations (e.g. noting that the 7 pounds is now gone like 2 days later). Consequently I dont get as upset or defeatist about a few extra pounds. However, that gain gives me a mini "wake-up call" which freaks me out enough to be good at least for the next few days, lest those pounds of water "turn into fat".

When the scale starts fluctuating out of my usual 3 pound range (its probably a larger range for a larger person), I know I've either lost fat (if I hit a *new low*) or gained actual fat and not water (if I know I've been "bad" and now I'm fluctuating one or more pounds higher than before--which is indeed the case for me now).

Also, if you choose a day as you're weigh-in day where you happen to be at the high end of your normal fluctuation, you may get unduly upset that you "lost nothing", when the very next day you may fluctuate below your normal and actually MISS that NEW LOW.

Personally for me weighing every day has given me the reality check I needed to maintain my weight. Its a struggle and a biatch managing your food intake somewhat based on the scale (I've been doing this for at least 20 yrs), but for people like us who have to watch our weight it can be worth it in order to maintain (you hear a lot of stories about people re-gaining). Of course you can also do this with a once a week weigh-in but it may not be as quick to catch an upward trend. To each his/her own I guess.

Your scale may not be accurate either. I know that every scale I`ve ever owned, whether it was a dial scale or digital, has at some time or another given me different weights.... For example I have gotten on the scale 3 times in a row, and each and every time got different weights, sometimes drastically different, like 10 lbs!!! Surely, I didn`t gain 10 lbs. in the previous 10 seconds, LOL! I mean, I AM very good at gaining, but no one is THAT good.....

Thanks for Sharing. I guess I hate fat. Fat is not good. It just pisses me off that the human body can retain water for nothing.....

Water looks like fat. I guess I can go for extremely low sodium foods. I will start watching my Sodium Intake.

I have been 10 pounds heavier at the end of the day than I was when I woke up.

Don't worry about it! As mentioned, it is mainly water retention and excess food accumulation.

My weight fluctuates dramatically all the time. All that matters is that over time, you are making steady progress with your same-time-of-the-day weigh-ins. Weigh yourself in the morning after going to the bathroom (if needed) and before eating or drinking to get an accurate weight.

Good luck with everything!

..

Hey,

I know exactly where you're coming from! I weigh 8 more lbs today than I did yesterday and I feel HUGE. I know im retaining water, a lot of it. You're right when you say its stupid that the body retains water for no reason. Ive had really salty foods the past few days which contributed to it, and then on top of that- it's PMS time. haha. Just be thankful you dont have to go through water retention that often! Being a woman sucks because every month you feel as if you've gained a whole bunch of fat, when really, its just water making you feel fat and uncomfortable.

Dont worry, it always goes away after a couple days! Mine is so bad I couldnt wear my rings or favorite jeans today.. but I didnt gain fat. :)
Its nothing to worry about, you didnt gain 7 lbs of fat. Keep going, and dont be discouraged!

:D

Just playing devils advocate, I don't think we should make total light of the upward fluctuation either. Its not ALWAYS water. People love to make that excuse, but we know after we had a bunch of excess calories some of those several extra pounds could indeed be fat, not water. And when its been a few days and that scale is not fluctuating back down, then you can bet you're on the gain. So dont sleep on that either, thinking its all water and keep doing the same thing. After a few days of it not going back down..yup..you've gained back some weight (like me right now ).
