How and When do you Weigh Yourself?

Whenever I begin dieting and losing weight, I always wonder when and how often to weigh myself and which way is the best to keep me grounded and on track towards my goal.

I've gone through periods before when I've weighed myself EVERY morning and obsessed by how slowly the scale moves. There are other times I've weighed myself once a week and the drawback to that has been that, if it's weigh day and I'm feeling a little fat, I'll just tell myself I'll put it off until tomorrow, and tomorrow and tomorrow, and then I just fall off track of my diet.

Once, at weight watchers, they told me that people who come in for their weigh-in on Mondays tend to do the best because on weekends, when you're more likely to cheat on your diet, you're reminded that you have a weigh-in on Monday and stay more committed, whereas those who weigh-in on Friday have an easier time cheating on their diet knowing that their weigh-in is a week away and they have time to make up for indiscretions.

So I wanted to know what you guys out there think. How do you weight yourself? What works best for you?

I weigh myself every day when I wake up. I find it's useful in keeping me on track but I don't let myself obsess over the ups and downs of the week. Every Monday I weigh in and that is all I focus on. Did I lose weight this week and this month?

Lately I've been focusing much more on my weekly calorie count and my running times. I think those are a much healthier number to focus on than just weight.

I weigh myself once a day, in the morning, after I get out of the shower, before I get dressed.

That's my official weight for the day and I log it and don't obsess.

I weigh in twice a week, on Sunday and Thursday...often enough to keep a close watch, but not get overly concerned about numbers. First thing in the AM, before dressing and eating. Works for me...but I am in maintenance.

I weight myself semi-randomly, although I expect my 'low' to be right after I get up in the morning. I've got a scale with a BF% tracker so lately I've been using it at different times just to get an idea of the daily variance.

If I were being more methodical about it, I'd pick one day a week - doesn't matter which one - and then weigh myself right after getting up in the morning once/week and recording that as the 'official' record. Anything else is just for the sake of science ;) Or something.

I think I'm going to start making a habit of weighing myself first thing every day. Just to keep a sort of running tally. I'm not too concerned about the numbers, more so about how I look and feel. I'm probably going to start keeping an official weight log every Monday like the WW cats do.

Otherwise, I usually just hop on the scale whenever the urge takes me, and I usually don't dwell on the number too long. I'm much more likely to sulk over a binge than a bad scale number.

I weigh in once a week, either Friday or Saturday, naked, after having a shower and visiting the bathroom. I used to weigh every day and it just made me go paranoid, so I stopped it. Once a week does nicely for me now :)

First thing in the morning, after I pee. Twice a week, on Sunday and Monday. Then I average the two and that's my official weight for the week.

I've also got the scales that measure your bodyfat %, but it's not accurate at all for me so I ignore that.

I actually don't weigh myself very often. Hardly ever actually, I don't know why it's just something I never felt the need to know. Kinda just went by what I saw in the mirror. :/

Technically speaking weekly. But I never fail to break down around Wednesdayish just to ensure that spoonful of potato salad didn't amount to a 5 pound weight gain. Usually it just puts my mind at ease. Other times it does turn out I looked at a piece of chocolate cake the wrong way and I'd better not skip out on the dance class after all.

I weigh myself every day before I shower.

If the weight is less than yesterday, I log it on my graph. If it's the same, or a pound heavier due to whatever reason, I ignore it until it's 1 pound lighter again. It's quite a motivational way to do it. I look forward to entering something on my graph. everything I enter is more weight loss.

so for example if i'm 300lbs on monday, I enter that, but on tuesday I'm 301, and wednesday I'm 300 again, I don't get to enter any weights on my graph, and that motivates me to stick with it so I can enter a new weight on my graph ASAP. So on thursday or friday when I get to 299, I can enter that, and I cant enter anything again until I hit 298.

I only weigh every two to three months because of the tendency of scale fluctuations. Have you ever weighed yourself and the scale registered a weight gain and you know you haven't done anything wrong? Not good for your psyche....The scale is only one measure of success. Your clothes and the way you feel can be better indicators of actual body changes. The scale merely measures pounds. Weighing in less frequently will assure the scale will show a loss as long as you stick to your plan. This works well for me!:seeya:

I obsess over the scale - I try not to weight my self everyday because when I do and the scale goes down a lbs or 2 I have self-sabatoge, like: "Oh - it's water loss in a couple days I'm just going to put it back on :-(", or "it's morning so of course I weigh less - if I weigh myself later it'll be more so I lost nothing" or "OMG it didn't move or it went up - I should skip eating today (which is an unhealthy choice - and I know that)". or " My scale's not acurate I weigh more than that".

Because of that I TRY to only weigh myself 1 time per week - but everytime I go in the bathroom the scale starts talking to me and says, "oh come on - stand on me - it'll be fun - you know you want to read me, mwhahahahah"

Every day. My scale is digital and my weight will be to the nearest 10th.

I log the results every couple of days and have only been on a diet since 1/7/10.

I'm 66 and soon to be 67. I have an appointment with my cardiologist in March and last visited him in December 09. His memo to my regular doctor was "Jim had a real good year this past year......He gained 13 pounds."

So I have a "vision quest" to loose the 13 pounds and another 13 as well.

So far I'm down 15.4 pounds since 1/7/10.

I use a software program to monitor my calorie intake and exercise.

If I don't falter I should be on or exceed my goal.

I'm 6'2" and current weigh 228.2.

Right now, I weigh myself once a month. The first of the month, after I wake up and do the 5-S routine. Yes, Once a month, really.

I'm just starting, and incrementally improving my diet. For the first 3 months, I'm not sweating how little I might lose as long as I am losing.

After that, I'll go to 2x a month unless my weight loss isn't going according to schedule, then I'll go at most, once a week so I can tweak, then back to 2x a month.

I'm not going to weigh myself daily, that's useless in my eyes. I'm working on losing pounds, not ounces and fractions. Some can do that, it's not for me.

Have to preface my answer by saying that scales are a horrible, inaccurate mode of weight loss progress. Measuring inches lost can give you a better idea of your progress.

Personally, I weigh in daily, every morning. Its not for everyone. The fluctuations are very regular. If you eat something rich is sodium for dinner, youre going to show up 3 pounds heavier the next morning. Still, it provides me with an idea of where I am everyday. I really only record my weekly weightloss, because it provides a much more consistent picture of where I am going.

I weigh myself every morning after I've used the washroom. I used to get totally depressed from the ups and downs of the scale, but now I find it fascinating. ;) It's neat how at different times of the month I can gain 4 pounds in 24 hours and can really see fluctuations in the scale when I'm eaten something with a fair amount of salt.
