how accurate are the machines?

I do around 45 minutes of cardio 5x week.

When I'm exercising the reading will say I've managed to work off roughly 500 or 550 calories.

How accurate are these readings. I'm talking about an eliptical trainer.

How accurate are any of those machines?

I use it at my gym. It is not a cheap one for personal use, if this makes a difference.

depends on your weight - but I'd guess the answer is not very accurate...

But honestly, dont worry so mch about how many calories it says you're burning, instead focus on getting the most bang for your buck - work on intensity and time spent...

Isn't it all a matter of calories burned?

Don't get me wrong, I feel great after my workout! It's such a nice feeling when I can feel the blood pumping through my thighs!

And, of course, my healthier heart!

Does it really matter how long I do the weight/strength training part of my workout?
I've been making sure I work out the different body parts. I figure with stronger muscles will come a more efficient calorie burning machine (my body).

true, yes?
Any measure I can use to know when my body is starting to use itself more efficiently?

I don't even LOOK at calories burnt.

I try to get my heart rate up, sweat, raise up the levels on the elliptical, feel my legs burn on the bike, try to run more kilometres each time.

Calories burnt is just a number. Being absolutly stuffed after a workout is a far better indicator of energy expended.

do you input your weight into the machines before you work out? i think that makes it more accurate, but its still not a for sure deal.

and

I did get to ticker website.
I was also able to make a measuring tape for myself.

How do I move that over here, AND have the info. as part of my personal postings information?

I see people who have this on every time they post. That is what I'd like to do.

Thanks again

about machines

I think it is is a great motivation and a tracking method if you know how many calories you burnt during work out.

Thanks for your input!

So tell me what is a good measure I can use for my workouts?

How can I use the eliptical trainer as a measuring device?

I want to lose weight as well as build my overall health and I want to tone and get defined! I'm doing about 15-20 minutes of weight training as well.

I'd definitely read the th WORKOUT thread in this forum - and increase your weight lifting time...

A good measure of how you're doing is how you're feeling... Are you upping the intensity after a while becasue it's getting too easy? you should be challenging yourself...

Results will show up in how your clothes are fitting and how more physically fit you're feeling... that's not calories burnt on a scale - it's a comparison of how you feel now vs how yo will feel

Use the "Calories burned" as a means of gauging yourself against different times you went, not as a means of deciding what extra you are able to eat.

how much more time should I spend on my weight/strenth training?

Should I take time off my cardio and add it to my weight training?

I'm pretty sure it would be better if I could just add to without taking off my cardio.
But, on many occasions I am too tired to do that.

I would like to lose around 2-3 inches off my waist.

I am a woman of 53, in menopause. i am currently taking in about 1400 - 1500 calories a day.
I work out 5x a week-45-50 minutes of cardio AND another 20-30 minutes of weight/strength training.

What exercises are best for trimming the waist? Would these be oblique exercises.
Some of this might have to do the my age and hormonal changes, yet I don't want to give in and not even try.

So any good oblique/waist exercises? Preferably in stages/ beginners,intermediate...

I had a friend in college who did a study on this subject. The results were pretty much as expected...the numbers the machine gave you were significantly higher than the actual calories burned. Considering that most machines, if not all, only ask for bodyweight and disregard body composition, I don't suppose you can really expect much more.

At the very least, you can hope that the machine is consistent with what it tells you. If this is true, at least you have a reference to which you can measure progress.
