Home gym recommendations

I am looking to pick up either a Bow Flex, or something similar for those days I am just not able to make it to the gym.

Tell me what you have at home for those days and if you like it or not. Perhaps I will just get a basic Smith machine.

Again, this would not be in place of going to the gym, but rather an accent to it!

Thanks guys.

I like the new bowflex a lot. Had the chance to play around on it and found it very easy to use and excellent placement and adjustment for the joints.

Expensive though.

i train at home and i have a power rack with adjustable bench. i also have a smith machine that i picked up cheap, dont really just it that much

Umm, that's a good question. I'd say the smith machine would be ideal if you still want to get a great workout whether you go to the gym or not. The bowflex is very smooth, but I guess it's just different. Even on a smith machine there is a possibility of injury, where as on a bowflex you don't have to worry about much...unless you're trying to play hide-n-seek between the cables. I've heard that it's harder to train with freeweights(therefore more beneficial) and not just heard but experience it too, so that's why I say the smith is recommended if you want to keep building.

Thanks for your feedback guys.

I have found both the bow flex and some smith machines on craigslist. No one ever wants to take those with them on a cross country move!

I am still interested in more feedback from people that have home gyms.

(as a side note, I am not a beginning lifter. Been at it for years now, but haven't had a good home system since I was a kid)

I'd say you're on the right track with the smith machine and bench or the bowflex. Just don't go with one of the old universal type gyms(you know, where there is a stack of plates and you move a pin to make weight adjustments)they are never smooth, the range of motion is dictated by the machine, and they are loud(if you plan on working out in the morning or late evening when other folks in your house are trying to sleep)

Some people will rag on the bowflex, because you are not 'pumping iron', but you can get a good workout with one. It's more like dumbell training than barbell training which makes it better still.

I just got a used Bowflex Power Pro with leg attachment and I really like it. We are lucky enough to have a space large enough to keep it open as well as having a manual treadmill in the room. They are not kidding when they say you can get a good workout in 20minutes. I did five sets of six four exercises this morning focusing on the chest and I am really feeling it here in the office. My only negatives are the leg attachment is a pain in the ass and I wish the lat pulldown unit had been included with ALL of the Bowfex units. It just makes no sense other than price point for it to be an add-on. Oh yes, the price I paid was $400.
