Home Gym Flooring

Hi there, I am in the process of setting up a home gym in a portion of my garage. Since the floor is a cement pad I am looking for interlocking flooring to put down. I have seen commercial rubber tiles (similar to what most gyms use) but they are very expensive and sometimes have a strong odor. I have also seen EVA foam tiles (like at sports authority, etc) and was wondering if anyone here has any input on them and how they would hold up in a weightroom environment. Thanks!

Those foam tiles are all over the internet, ebay, and a lot of retail stores (sold as gym flooring or kids playroom flooring). But I really don't think they will hold up in a weight room environment, they compress easy and indent...rubber is more solid.

Do you have any weight equipment on them? Doesnt comprses bad? Is the top skin durable or do they scratch up easily? If you leave dumbells on them do they indent?

It will leave marks where heavy equipment sits on it. I would imagine if you left dumbells sitting on it for long periods it may make marks as well. I have iron plates sitting out on it (need another weight tree) and since the weight is spread out more, that has left no marks.

As far as scratching it up, my two dobermans run over it constantly and haven't managed to destroy it. I have some that is the older style and has some scratches after about 3 years, the newer style, which has a diamond plate design (it all still fits together) seems more durable and more cushioned at the same time.

It's pretty cheap too, a pack of it (12 squares) is about $12 and it took 3 packs to cover my whole gym area...if a piece gets damaged just replace that one piece

I am going to be doing about 300 square feet and it will be much cheaper to go with EVA foam than rubber. Hmmmm....Maybe I will pick up one pack and play around with it. I prefer the 2x2 squares over the 1x1.

Horse stall mats.

From Dave Draper's web-site an setting up a home-gym.......

" If you live near a feed store, farm supply or tack shop, you may wish to consider the purchase of either stall mats (used in animal stalls) or truck bed liner. Both of these items are available at a reasonable cost and the purchase of a couple of stall mats or a section of truck bed liner shouldn’t set you back too much…consider it money well spent to protect your flooring and deaden noise somewhat. Two sections measuring two feet square will be all that is necessary "

....I've heard of more than a few guys that over the years have used these sorts of mats for home gyms.

Food for thought.:)

I didn't read all the posts, but I like to put a few layers of plywood down where I am likely to be pickingup/settingdown/dropping weights.
