I am terrified about the holidays coming. I always start losing weight then one time I eat something not on plan and I go crazy. any suggestions on how I can keep this from happening again this year, I have lost 5 pounds and want to keep them off but not miss out on the holiday dinner. How can I control myself when faced with GRAVY.......

I'd use something other than gravy, but the potatoes will be the killer, due to all the high GI carbs.

Choose sweet potatoes over white to minimize the GI impact. Go with vegetables intead of dressing. If you keep the carbs to a minimum (vegetables and fruit excluded), you should get by ok.

Make sure your metabolism is up to speed also.

Cynic is right (of course, he usually is) - try to choose the better of the foods available.

Don't be afraid to let yourself have some treats, after all, it's Thanksgiving/Christmas, just try to keep it too a minimum rather than stuffing yourself full. Maybe instead of having turkey with a pile of dressing, try turkey, a little dressing, and a bunch of veggies to fill the gap. Have a small piece of pie with some fruit rather than a couple of big ol' slices (and ditch the whipped cream).

It won't be easy. Get a big glass of water, stay away from alcohol, fill up on the Turkey (hmmmm hope it isnt' too dry) Don't deny yourself anything, just take a little! Take a walk instead of a nap after dinner! Dont' be afraid to eat a few smaller meals instead of one gigantic one. It's not easy..if you fail, you fail, if you succeed, you haven't backstepped a bit...it's up to you!!!!!

I wouldn't worry about the fat. You want the calories to rev up to the metabolism. What you should worry about is high carbs, that will lead to massive insulin production. I'm not advocating an Atkins diet, but carbs are 4cals/g; sugar, starch and flour carbs tend to break down very quickly, spike the insulin massively and don't provide a sense of satiety for long.

When eating around the holidays, try to divide your fat evenly among saturated (lean meats, cheeses), mono-unsaturated (nuts, seeds, olives) and poly-unsaturated (more nuts and seeds).
