Hiyas!

I'm happy to find you all! I am a certified personal trainer who as been involved in a broad range of exercise and fitness from martial arts and bodybuilding to hiking and triathlon. Even though I am a fitness professional, I am the last person who will claim to have all the answers. In fact, as a past martial arts instructor, I learned long ago that one can learn from anyone; at any level. I am here to share what I know with people who may benefit from what I know and to learn from others who know things I don't. And when neither of those happen, perhaps just explore the options with others interested in fitness.

Welcome to the forum Steve ;) I would love to get involved in triathlons because I love running/bike riding but my swimming isn't the strongest. How do you go about your training for a triathlon ?

Thanks for the welcome.

rainbowpugs--do one anyway! Listen, I did my first in the same position you are in and when my son (then 14) heard my plan he jumped in too (we were both cyclists and had run some). So we went down to the community center pool and were shocked, amazed, and HORRIFIED at how difficult it is to swim (right) - sure we could swim to stay alive but the whole head turn and breathe--oh my!

So we decided our bike was great, our running okay, and our swim sucked! We researched the web, talked to swim team members and coaches and we swam like crazy. Our training was three weekly swim, and once each for bike and run (and they were more or less maintenance work outs).

Towards the end, we did "bricks" combining swim/bike and bike/run workouts. One thing: our first race was an open water swim in a lake and there were no lines on the bottom! We had no idea how to "spot" (major coordination to get a breath AND look up. But the whole experience was awesome. Like runners, triathletes are super awesome in my experience and are willing to answer questions, encourage you to do well, and pat you on the back. Plus, there are always foolish newbies in every event--except the big ones of course.
