Hi my name is Kira, I'm 21 and looking for as much help and support as I can get...

Yesterday I went to the asthma clinic and the nurse asked if she could take my weight...it was then I discovered I am 226 pounds and at 5"7 this puts me as severely obese.

I know I need to make some changes and I determined to get healthy.
I have already cut my portion size down and bought two dancerise videos as I thought a fun type exercise DVD might encourage me to really stick to it.

I know it's not going to be easy. I'm embarrassed, upset and wanting to just hide away with chocolate and crisps :piggy:....but I know I can't, so hopefully this is the start of a new Kira!

Kira,

First of all...Welcome and Good Luck!

When I started a few weeks ago, I asked everyone what the best piece of advice they have was. Everybody pretty much said to "keep a food log". Having been strictly doing that these past couple weeks, I can say that it's incredibly helpful. What I discovered was that I would eat high calorie things that I thought were "good" (carbs are especially deadly). I've since learned what foods tend to fill me up that don't have a lot of calories, and I don't really feel like I'm on a "diet" at all anymore.

The second piece of advice I'll give you is to start slow on your exercise. You probably feel very motivated to go out right now and put in hard workouts, but be cautious of burning yourself out. You want to ease yourself into a way of life, not overwork yourself and burn out right away.

Finally, make some goals. Figure out what weight you want to end at, and figure out some milestones along the way to work towards.

If you have an iphone, I highly recommend an application called "Lose It", for food and exercise logging. I'm not sure I would have made it this far without it.

Once again, good luck!!

Good Luck Kira - just take everything one step at a time - it won't happen overnight - but it will happen - you are starting on a fantastic journey, anyway I can help to keep yo motivated just let me know - you'll get to where you want to go - just start slow and enjoy the ride !

Very Cool

Its good to see when someone is starting their fitness journey. I can personally attest that being on this forum is a great thing because many people will give you tons of support :)

What are your goals and time frames your looking to hit?

Hi Kira,

I know the feelings of embarssment all too well!

The thing that I have learnt in the last 7 weeks is that small manageable, long term changes are much better than big short term changes!

Bit of a random question but are you a "Geordie"?

Good luck!

I second keeping a food log-- that's what I do and it really helps!

Good luck and don't look at this as an embarrassing situation. You're taking steps to improve your health, so you should be proud of that. :)
