I've been thinking about doing one of these weight loss diary things for a long while, but I didn't do it until now, for some reason.
With this diary, I'm hoping to find additional motivation to get rid of those last few pounds that cling so insistently on to my body and to hopefully motivate other people as well. As you can see from my ticker in my signature, I only need to lose another 12 pounds until I am at my goal weight. Let me tell you though, those 12 pounds are a royal pain the butt.
But first, let me give you a (maybe not so) small summary of my weight loss journey:
I started my weight loss project about 15 months ago, at the end of April 2012. Back then, I was 5'7'' and weighed about 265 lbs, which put me at a BMI of 42.5. I've been unhappy with the way I looked and felt for a long time and one day, completely out of the blue, I changed my whole way of life around.
I started eating a lot less and much healthier. I ate less meat and more vegetables and fruit. I ditched fast food, sodas and all sweets. I will admit, however, that there were times when my willpower faltered and I binged on sweets. But even with those occasional binge attacks, I still lost weight at a fairly fast pace.
Eventually, instead of having these binges, I just granted myself a scheduled cheat day every week, on Sunday. It was meant as a day where I could eat whatever I want and not feel bad about it and to keep me from going crazy. Having this cheat day completely stopped all binge attacks.
I've found that one of the biggest factors which helped me through this journey was consistency. Consistent results through consistent weight loss. The cheat day provided said consistency by eliminating unscheduled binges.
I want to emphasize that, because I think it was a big step forward for me and because I think it's something many people overlook.
I also started doing sports. The weather was just getting warmer and it would have been a perfect time to go for a walk or to go cycling, but at that time I was so ashamed of my appearance that I didn't want to go outside. I had a rowing machine and a stationary bike, as well as a boxing bag in my cellar however, and that's where I went to train.
In the beginning, before I read up on all the scientific articles on weight loss and before I watched all those fitness videos, I had no idea what I was doing. I didn't know how weight loss and the body in general actually worked.
When training, I just hopped on to the stationary bike, rode it until my feet couldn't take it anymore (which basically means I couldn't do more than a minute, that's how out of shape I was), then beating the boxing bag for some time, then going over to the rowing machine, then back to the bike, and so on. If someone had watched me do all that, they would've thought I'm crazy, but as I said, I had no idea what I was doing. I thought if it makes me pant and sweat, I'm on a good way at least, which I suppose was true.
At that time, 10 minutes of training was the most I could handle.
I gradually worked myself up to 15 and then 20 minutes of training. At that point, my weight loss was going really well, and that gave me the confidence to step outside one day to go cycling. It was an amazing feeling, and after that day I said "Goodbye" to my cold (and creepy) cellar and never went back down there again. I suppose that's where my real journey started.
And now, 15 months later, I'm here, trying to shed the last few pounds and wanting to help others out by motivating them, because I know how hard it is and because I know that motivation is everything.
Alright, that's it for my introductory post. Hope I didn't bore you too much.
I will be posting more about what I eat each day and what kind of exercise I do very soon.
Thank you all for reading and have a great day!
