Hitting the Home Stretch - Shedding the Last Few Pounds

The Heretic

New member
I've been thinking about doing one of these weight loss diary things for a long while, but I didn't do it until now, for some reason.

With this diary, I'm hoping to find additional motivation to get rid of those last few pounds that cling so insistently on to my body and to hopefully motivate other people as well. As you can see from my ticker in my signature, I only need to lose another 12 pounds until I am at my goal weight. Let me tell you though, those 12 pounds are a royal pain the butt.

But first, let me give you a (maybe not so) small summary of my weight loss journey:

I started my weight loss project about 15 months ago, at the end of April 2012. Back then, I was 5'7'' and weighed about 265 lbs, which put me at a BMI of 42.5. I've been unhappy with the way I looked and felt for a long time and one day, completely out of the blue, I changed my whole way of life around.

I started eating a lot less and much healthier. I ate less meat and more vegetables and fruit. I ditched fast food, sodas and all sweets. I will admit, however, that there were times when my willpower faltered and I binged on sweets. But even with those occasional binge attacks, I still lost weight at a fairly fast pace.
Eventually, instead of having these binges, I just granted myself a scheduled cheat day every week, on Sunday. It was meant as a day where I could eat whatever I want and not feel bad about it and to keep me from going crazy. Having this cheat day completely stopped all binge attacks.

I've found that one of the biggest factors which helped me through this journey was consistency. Consistent results through consistent weight loss. The cheat day provided said consistency by eliminating unscheduled binges.
I want to emphasize that, because I think it was a big step forward for me and because I think it's something many people overlook.

I also started doing sports. The weather was just getting warmer and it would have been a perfect time to go for a walk or to go cycling, but at that time I was so ashamed of my appearance that I didn't want to go outside. I had a rowing machine and a stationary bike, as well as a boxing bag in my cellar however, and that's where I went to train.
In the beginning, before I read up on all the scientific articles on weight loss and before I watched all those fitness videos, I had no idea what I was doing. I didn't know how weight loss and the body in general actually worked.

When training, I just hopped on to the stationary bike, rode it until my feet couldn't take it anymore (which basically means I couldn't do more than a minute, that's how out of shape I was), then beating the boxing bag for some time, then going over to the rowing machine, then back to the bike, and so on. If someone had watched me do all that, they would've thought I'm crazy, but as I said, I had no idea what I was doing. I thought if it makes me pant and sweat, I'm on a good way at least, which I suppose was true.

At that time, 10 minutes of training was the most I could handle.
I gradually worked myself up to 15 and then 20 minutes of training. At that point, my weight loss was going really well, and that gave me the confidence to step outside one day to go cycling. It was an amazing feeling, and after that day I said "Goodbye" to my cold (and creepy) cellar and never went back down there again. I suppose that's where my real journey started.

And now, 15 months later, I'm here, trying to shed the last few pounds and wanting to help others out by motivating them, because I know how hard it is and because I know that motivation is everything.

Alright, that's it for my introductory post. Hope I didn't bore you too much. :)
I will be posting more about what I eat each day and what kind of exercise I do very soon.

Thank you all for reading and have a great day!

Amazing Heretic! It's a wonderful feeling when you get to the point where your not embarrassed about how you look. Another wonderful feeling is getting out of the cellar, yikes.

I know I say this a lot and it never makes any sense: But good luck on the weight-loss journey! It's only 12lbs away!

Thanks for the kind words everyone. :)

What I ate today:

A cup of coffee in the morning, along with a big glass of water

A medium sized piece of fish, homemade potato mash and a nice load of mixed vegetables.

A glass of orange juice.

I also went to go cycling 10 miles while attempting to go as fast as I can, for a quick and intense training session.

Overall I'd say that I consumed about 1000 calories over the day.

Sunday morning is my weighing day where I check on the progress I've made over the whole week. I also tracked my progress this June in this thread here, if anyone's interested: http://weight-loss.fitness.com/threads/58645-Just-Do-It-In-June!

Thanks again for the support guys, I really appreciate it.

Great summary post. Congratulations on doing so well, Heretic! I found many things in your post that rang true for me as well, especially your comments about consistency. Keep it up and you will undoubtedly reach your goal in a fair and reasonable time.

What I ate today:

Medium sized piece of veal, together with a small bowl of tomato salad, roasted onions, bell peppers, zucchini and potatoes. Very satisfying meal.

I also drank a glass of orange juice.

I'd estimate that I consumed about 1400 calories. Not going to eat anything else today.

I'm also gonna do my standard HIIT cardio program today.

Program consists of:

3 sets of Mountain Climbers
3 sets of Russian Twists

30 seconds rest

3 sets of Burpees
3 sets of Squat Jacks

30 seconds rest

3 sets of Jack Knife Crunches
3 sets of Supermans

30 seconds rest

3 sets of Push Ups
3 sets of Supine Push Ups

30 seconds rest

1 minute of Jumping Jacks

Gonna weigh myself on Sunday morning, pretty excited to see this week's results. :)

Thanks for the kind words Sunflower. :)

I also spontaneously decided to have my cheat day every two weeks instead of every week. I'll have to get rid of it altogether sooner or later anyway, so might as well do that now. Should save a whole bunch of calories.

Didn't exercise today and I ate too much, need to get into the right mindset again. Will try my best to make up for it over the week. I'm so close, I can't afford to slip now.

Good luck to you too, Sunflower. :)

Today I went cycling for a full hour while going as fast as I could. Today also was a fasting day for me, as I didn't eat anything the whole day. I do one of those every two weeks.

What I ate today:

Cup of coffee in the morning

Bowl of greek salad with 3 slices of bread

Glass of orange juice

That's about 700 calories.

That might not look like much, but I need to accomodate for the fact that my body needs a lot fewer calories to maintain weight, and even less to lose it.

I didn't exercise today, but I'm planning to do a 2 hour cycling session tomorrow.

You know what, scratch that last part about me not having exercised today. My parents and me plucked 9 lbs worth of black currants from our two giant black currant bushes. If that ain't cardio, I don't know what is. And tomorrow, we'll make black currant jam. :D

Looked up black currant on the intergoogles. Interesting that my country decided to ban the things for a long time (hence my ignorance of them). Looks like the ban has been lifted in some parts though. Couldn't grow them around here anyway.

I'll have to find some and try it.

Jam for the win! I found my mojo, by the way. Have been to the gym today and yesterday :D Hope you've had a good day xxx

Hey MrVee and Sunflower, thanks for stopping by!

MrVee, I had no idea black currants were banned in the United States. I found that curious, though having employed the services of the intergoogles myself now, I suppose I can see why. Do try them out if you can find them and see if you like them. I like eating them raw because I love their taste, but my grandpa, for example, only likes them as jam. They do have a slightly sour taste to them, even when they are ripe, so it's definitely not for everyone. They're really healthy though!

Sunflower, great to hear that you've found your mojo again. I know it's hard to stay motivated sometimes, but we'll push through! Hope you had a great day as well. :)

I don't think the berries themselves are banned, just growing them and so I suspect the market for importing them isn't very large.

Went biking for an hour and then went on to make the black currant jam. Making the jam made me pant and sweat even more than the biking. So far, so good.

Regarding meals, I actually haven't had anything other than a bowl of oatmeal with some walnuts, a banana and some pineapple mixed into it. Haven't really had time for anything else, was a really busy day today. Will try to eat a little more tomorrow.
