Hit a wall

Hi guys,

I've been very determined to lose weight since being on break from studies. I've joined the gym and I tend to eat about 1400 calories a day.

I go to the gym 4 times a week and do mainly cardio; running, cycling etc I also do rowing and a tiny amount of weights.

Over the past 4 years whenever I get down to 13 stone 12 pounds (194 pounds) it ALWAYS seems to stop dead and I make no progress whatsoever.

I got down to this weight about a month ago, then I went to a music festival and drank loads of beer and had loads of junk food so I gave up when I got back. Now that I'm back into it I'm once again stuck. I've not had any change in weight for about 9 days.

Any advice? The dream is to get to 12 stone 12pounds.

Hey! I seem to face the same problem as you :s... every time i reach 175 i cant seem to get past that. I either gain above 175 or i get back to 175. It's pretty annoying! I'm also starting to exercise and eating more healthy :s...but really weird!

I have only missed 3 days at the gym in 14 weeks. I do 1 1/2 hours of weight machines (18 different machines) followed by 30 minutes riding the bike. I have lost 20 lbs in this time but have come to a stand still, I never eat over 1500 calories a da..Any suggestions/

I suggest changing up your exercise routine. It sounds like you are hitting a plateau. This happens when your body gets used to the exericises your doing. Try upping the intesity on your cardio machines or ad inclines. Also be sure to watch your calorie intake closely. You may be eating some hidden calories somewhere. Try to drink more water than anything else, as you could also be drinking your calories through sodas, gatorade, etc.

This is great advice.

As well I would add in more strength training. It's a great way to burn calories as well as tone your figure. You won't bulk up as long as you're in a calorie deficit.

I am no specialist, and I cannot tell you why you hit a wall while still exercising rigorously and eating right, but the advice you have been given sounds like good advice.
From what I've read, there are several reasons why you might hit a plateau, and none of them mean you are failing. Think of your diet as a war with your body, and when you hit a plateau, your body is winning some of the battles. By no means does that mean that the war is lost.
For example, when you give in to cravings and eat junk food, you will probably not lose any weight that week. Think of it as psychological warfare by your body: It is telling you that life is so much better with the food it was used to.
Another example, when your body gets used to the exercises you were doing, they no longer use the same amount of calories, and while you are going through the same routines, you are no longer achieving the same calorie deficit as before. Once again, psychological warfare, your body is telling you that these routines are fine, your muscles have grown enough, no need to get in better shape! I tell you, change the routines, increase the intensity or use other muscles, and win another battle over your body!
You only lose the war when these things demotivate you, and you stop with your diet and exercises. I don't think there has ever been a war where the victory wasn't won at the cost of some lost battles!

I need to do some extreme weight loss, and one of the methods I chose was a Wii fit. When I started 3 months ago, just doing the stepping exercises on the Wii fit board, which is only a few centimeters high, would raise my heart rate enough to start burning fat. Now that I am in better shape, I wasn't even breaking a sweat any more and I could see on my heart rate monitor that my heart rate didn't even go above 100 any more! So, I build a 13 centimeters high plateau to put the Wii fit board on, and I can tell you, I am once again breaking a sweat and raising my heart rate! I consider this a battle won, and one step closer to winning the war.

These are my thoughts, they may be wrong, the may be based on thin air, but it is what keeps me motivated!

I had the same problem in the 240 lbs range. I was working out 5-6 days a week. Usually an hour or more on the elliptical. Some push ups some weights and some crunches. No matter what I did. Couldn't get past their. Was like that for months. During August I quit coming on this forum. Stopped working out but some late night walks. But the number one thing I did was change some of my diet. First thing I did was caught out my cheap ice creams. That I would allow myself if i worked out all week. I did that and lost 7 lbs and got into the height 230s. Now I'm exercising and changing my whole diet and losing. I am hoping I can keep it up. I want to be in the low 200's by middle of November for my birthday. I am going to try and come on here and motivate myself everyday more.

Just try changing little things. Like switch up your exercises or change something part of your diet. Theirs always something we can all do to improve to achieve our weight loss goals. Its a long struggle but we can all get their.

Everyone hits a wall sooner or later...I would suggest to mix up your gym and eating routine at that point so you confuse your body into losing more weight...After a while the plateau effect comes into play and it stops people dead in their tracks...I would definitely suggest mixing up your dieting and routine for the time being...

Hi Everyone,

I started my weight loss on May 16th. Since then I've lost 40 lbs, 20 in the first 3 weeks and the rest since. During this time I found that I hit several plateaus. I would lose weight and then stay there for about 3 weeks, then I would lose 5 lbs. in a few days, then stay at that weight for 3 more weeks, then lose a few more pounds. The important thing to remember is to stay the course. Keep on exercising and keep on watching what you eat. It sucks that it is a continuing battle, but the end result is worth the fight. GL to all and I hope we all reach our goal weights... =)
