hi!

Hey, I'm topher, long-time message board kid but new here.

Leigh (theleip) introduced me to the site and has been working to help me trim down. I've got a ways to go, but Leigh's very helpful, so hopefully I'll get where I want to in time.

I'm 25 and have always fallen solidly in the 'overweight' category... I've never really had a terrible diet, but am cursed by unfortunate genes and a fairly sedentary lifestyle... I was working as a contractor for several years, so I've developed some strength from that, but still have this nasty body fat to shed.

So, the last couple of weeks I've been loyally doing strength-training 3 days a week and HIIT twice a week. I've found the HIIT brutal, but it leaves me feeling great the next couple of days, so I've come to enjoy it.

I'm working on being more careful with my diet. I'm a vegetarian, which of course makes things a little more complicated when it comes to finding cheap, effective sources of protein. I've also realized that I don't quite eat enough, so I'm working on boosting that to get my metabolism in order. It'll probably take me a couple weeks to really get on track with how much to eat and when, but I'm sure it'll be worth it in the end.

Aside from that... I'm a music junkie and tend to talk a lot on message boards. Hence the long intro here.

I've been lurking the board for quite some time and have found a ton of great stuff here. So, I'll probably be poking my head in now and then with questions.

See you around!

fist off welcome to the forum.

I personally was a vegetarian for quite some time however i now will eat the lean meat mainly chicken, and fish "but i do NOT eat pig meat and seldom ever cow meat"

For protein i suggest
HEMP protein ;) its what i take, it has 11-15 grams of protein per serving, its it has no taste, and best of all its cheap and all has a complete amino acid profile
not to mention
very high in fiber
High magnesium content and contains good fats
No trans fats
the brand i am using right now is "Nutiva" Organic Hemp Protein Powder.

If your a strict vegetarian i can not recommend this product enough

Wow, I had no idea hemp was a food. Or, well... you know. I didn't expect it to be that nutritious.

I used to be more strict, but I've been eating more eggs (vegetarian-fed) lately to try to get a more complete range of amino acids. I used to get my protein mainly from various soy-based foods, but most of the other sources of decent protein were also pretty high in fat (cheese, peanut butter, etc.)

Leigh hooked me up with some egg protein to use in cooking... that's been pretty good.

Otherwise, I'm pretty strict. Once I've learned some good veggie sources (the hemp protein might work out very well) that give me the full range of aminos, I'll probably be more strict... no egg, no dairy. But that seems pretty tough to do right now, especially on a budget.

Hemp protein could have a place in balanced diet. Hemp contains all 10 essential amino acids. Some of these amino acids are present though in limiting quantities (valine, tryptophan, isoleucine, and lysine). Like other vegetable proteins (soy, legume, nut/seed).
So the value of hemp protein is limited. That doesn't mean that it's bad, but not as high quality as animal proteins.

If you combine your protein sources right though you can achieve a desirable effect even with the lack of animal product.

On the side of it being cheap though it isn't. At least not that I have found locally. It is only available at earth fare and it is very pricey for a small amount.

And Topher is pretty much the most awesome guy ever, so wait a little while before you start trying to sexually harass him.
