also is it a good idea for me to be doing sit-ups with a fat belly? doesnt it build muscle under the belly which only makes the belly bigger?

thanks for your help. gladly appreciated

Hi Kevin and welcome, Like you I have always struggled with my weight, and although I lost it all at 20 I put it back on again by 25, now I'm 28 and I really regret having missed out on so much.

When it comes to food you have to remember you are the one in charge of what you eat, don't let the food control you or like me you will really regret it later on.

For me it was noodles and chocolate. A big bowl of noodles, chicken legs and some vegetables to make me feel like I'm eating healthier.. then chocolate as a snack. 3 months into my diet I have not had any noodles and not a single bit of chocolate, and I don't even miss either of them.

The fact that you're posting here shows you want to make a change, and you will if you really want to.

Exercising alone is not for everyone, maybe joining a gym would be good for you, or having a like minded friend to exercise with, then you can push each other on.

sit-ups are OK if you want to train your abs, and you will burn a little off that way but not much, the more muscle groups you train at the same time the more fat you burn, so you can do aerobic exercises and resistance training.

For me I like to do weight training such as squats, bench press, flat dumbbell fly, overhead press. Training as many muscle groups as I can at the same time. But as I'm on a diet I wont be gaining much bulk, I need an excess of calories each day for that.

For aerobic training I started off with just long walks and moved onto walking up and down hills, now I go up and down some steep steps for 40 minutes each night.

what ever you decide to do, keep it simple, get a workout you like and stick to it, push yourself with what ever exercise you do and the more you push the better the results, all the best!!

thanks for the reply. i went to the gym today. i did like 35ish minutes between the rowing machine, bike and threadmill. i then went to the pool to swim for a further 30mins. i ruined it all when i came home and my sister offered me chips from the chipper. its eating right is my main problem. if i could always have the thoughts of loosing weight on my mind then i probably wouldnt eat so much shit.

Talk to your family, tell them how you feel and they can support you in little ways that are so important, like not putting temptations in your way, and encourage you.

So you had chips that day, you haven't failed, so long as you're not eating unhealthy all the time, you can let yourself have the foods you like the most a few times a week.

You say you're a little over 13 stone, at 5'9 that dose not seem over weight to me, not by much that's for sure, I'm guessing you're not of a muscular build, if so then weight training and building lean muscle will make you burn more calories, and not to worry, you wont just put on muscle while keeping the body fat, so long as you do it right and don't go eating more, the gym should help you with your diet as well.

id love to be able to get into some sort of classes or something. id like to build muscle. get some nice abs but thats very unrealistic with the fat ive got now. i basically want to loose my belly and thich upper legs

Kevin,

Losing weight is simple, just burn off more calories than you take in. Dieting is one of the hardest things in the world to do because you have to stay almost totally focused.

I would try to get your family involved. Tell them why you want to lose weight and ask for their help. You might be surprised by their change in attitude.

Everyone has bad days or parts of days. Don't let it get you down - just try to realize what frame of mind you were in and what triggered your bad eating. Once you do that you can try to avoid those situations.
