Hi :)

My name's Rochella, but I prefer to be called Rocky. I'm 17, 5ft 5 and weigh 144lb. I want to lose 44lb.

I've started getting up at 5:30am and jogging but I can only manage half an hour before I'm too tired to do anymore. Although, I only started jogging today so hopefully this'll improve over time.

I'm going to improve my diet; I don't eat much junkfood usually but lately I've been binging a lot and gained a lot of weight. I'm going to cut junkfood, bread and cheese out of my diet, aswell as juice and fizzy drinks, and I'm going to cut back on milk and most other dairy products too (bar fat free yoghurts).

I'm also going to alternate my exercise routines, i.e., next week I'll do a week of swimming, the week after a week of badminton, rather than jogging all the time because I'm scared I'll end up getting bored and giving up.

Does this sound like a decent, do-able diet plan to you guys? I've had problems with my eating in the past, and used to fast for long periods of time (longest I got was 23 days) but stopped when I lost most of my hair. That's when the binging started and I gained a ton of weight.

Thanks :)

Fasting for 23 days and losing most of your hair, wow that's hardcore..well clearly you learned that crash diets and fast changes don't work. Bread and dairy products actually aren't that bad, buy whole wheat bread, fat free milk and low fat cheese and you'll be fine. If you are overweight (which you aren't at 5'5 144lb) then chances are it's more the junkfood and fizzy drinks which are contributing to that problem.

Start counting the calories of what you eat, write it down, aim for around 1500 calories a day. and can help you with this. Also read the stickied posts in the nutritional and exercise forums.

By the way 5'5 100lbs is underweight, don't kill yourself with any crazy fasts again if your body won't take you all the way there. I'm serious when I say I'm kind of surprised you're still alive after a 23 day fast. Things like that have long term health consequences (such as DEATH) which will come back and bite you in the butt later, and it also alters your metabolism which can make weight loss harder. Try for 115-120lbs first.

Yeah, I think you are overdoing it with this plan. This is definately a time where small changes = big success. You really want to be 5'5 and 100 pounds? That is an easy 25 pounds under 'ideal'. That scares me. Why do you want to drop to an unhealthy weight? You are at the most 20 pounds 'overweight' and I don't even agree there. You are young, working out so....why do you want to lose the weight you have?

I'm sorry..I think maybe you need to talk to family or someone professional about what you want to do. With a history of eating problems, the desire to drop to that low of a weight isn't healthy. I know why I want to lose weight, it's actually one of the first things we have to come to grips with.
Binging is almost always emotional. Until you can come to grips with the why then the cycle will keep going.

I have to side with Jericho on this you have some very unhealthy history, and should really think about talking to someone.

None of us can tell you what you want or what you should do with your life but as someone who has had experience with disordered eating myself (and I'm sure many of the people on here have too, whether it's binging, purging or restricting food in some form or another) I ask you to look at WHY you want to lose weight?

Do you want to be healthier? This is a good reason to want to get fit and lose some pounds but if that is your reason, I have to echo the advice already given that 100lbs at 5'5 is not particularly healthy.

Or maybe the reason is something, that if you really thought about it, cannot be solved with weight loss? Do you feel insecure, inadequate, out of control, anxious or depressed? Emotions like these can trigger feelings: you might think 'maybe if I can just make yourself a certain weight or shape then I will be happy' - but I have to tell you that no matter how much weight you lose, difficult feelings are something inside your head and won't leave you like the fat will - you will only end up hurting yourself more in the long run by not facing up to your true feelings.

Anyway, enough of me sounding like a psych ...

All I say is: seriously think about your reasons for wanting to lose weight and consider researching healthier eating and thinking habits than those that you are currently considering. Consider maybe talk to a friend, family member or an impartial stranger such as a school counsellor about your feelings and your past eating/weight issues.
