hi, running problems

hey everyone. my name is Rich. im 20.

i used to do alot of sports including cricket and football and was never thin but always quite well built. anyways i turned 17 and started driving and drinking and basically lost interest in the sports and then became a bit chunky.

after putting on a bit of weight and becoming unfit i started football again which helped alot and when my fitness was returning i was injured, i got kicked in the toes which bent my foot up towards my shin and ruined my tendons (i think anyway, never saw a physio). anyway, that was about 4-5 months ago and in that time i havent been able to do anything active really so ive put on 2.5 stone and about 8 inches :O. yesterday i bought an ankle support as i thought enough is enough and tonight i went for a run, i walked to my local cricket pitch and jogged around it about 4 times, ankle hurt slightly but not too bad and then my back started hurting quite badly at the bottom, i walked a lap and then jogged another couple then had to stop. this used to happen when i ran on concrete/tarmac etc... but this is grass. it hurts mainly on the left at the bottom but the right hand side also hurts.
I was wondering if annyone else has experienced this?

i would love to sort it out so i can carry on running and loose this fat.

thanks
Rich

Rich,

Immediately I am thinking ouch! Your toes are pointing toward your shin and you did not see a physio. Maybe you might consider doing that right away. Before you do anything please give that some consideration.

Frank

You could consider a sport that does not require as much impact, perhaps bicycling, swimming, rowing, or something of that nature. Also, you can lose weight by cutting calories and possibly doing some light exercise.

Oh, by the way, your back problems are no doubt the result of favoring your bad ankle, causing you to run in an awkward manner.

You're 20 years old and you don't see how this is a problem? Go to the doctor, dude. Nobody here is going to be able to help you; only a doctor is going to be able to do that.

Thanks for the replys. I think i havent explained too well. When i was playing football i was kicked in the foot underneath towards the toe end whih bent m foot back for a moment. Its not still bent back, just still hurts slightly. The favouring my stronger foot may have something to do with it though as it was my righ foot i hrt and my left lower back causing most of the problem. Would improper running shoes cause a problem too, even on a soft surface like grass? Im using football trainers at the moment.

Once again, go to the doctor. You're obviously injured and need to seek medical attention for this. We can sit here and recommend shoes all day, but your problem isn't going to go away.

I agree, if you are still getting pain then get to the Dr. I have a similar problem with my left knee, injured it about 2 years ago, Dr told me just to rest it. When i started back at the gym Jan this year my cardio involved cross trainer / bike and running machine, I noticed that on the running machine the pain would come back (cos of the impact of the motion) so I dropped that part of my cardio. The pain went away, and 2 weeks ago I decided to add a fitness circuit training class to my workouts for a bit of variety. Guess what, after 30mins i could feel the problem coming back. I have been to the Dr and I have to go for a x-ray and an mri scan.

basically it sounds like this pain is always going to be there if you don't get it seen to, and in the mean time you can improve your fitness by doing other things as mentioned above, swimming, cycling, gym, something that dosen't put alot of stress / impact on your feet.

Well ive been using my rowing machine a bit now. Going the gym tonight and might have a word with the physio there.
£2.25 a week membership :D

You're obviously not listening to anybody here. Why bother starting this thread if you're just going to ignore everybody's advice?

SIGH

I think he just means you should make getting your foot seen to as a priority, as it's limiting what you can do right now, and could take a while to heal.

You lot said to row. Im going to see a physio. How am i not listening, im doing what you said :S

Physios aren't doctors. If you have a broken bone or torn cartilage, a physio isn't going to be able to help you. So, go to a doctor. You can't find those at the gym.

I hurt my neck when I was in high school and ended up tearing all of the ligaments and cartilage from my spinal column. My first step was having the football trainer who was on duty (who is a physio) take a look at me. He couldn't diagnose what was wrong, so he sent me to a doctor. It wasn't until I saw a doctor that I found out what was wrong with me. He had to examine me, take x-rays, etc. No physio is going to be able to help you with proper rehab if they don't know what's wrong with you first. Not just "I bent my toe up and it hurt"...they need to know what's medically wrong with you, on the inside - broken bone, torn ligament, etc. And, only a doctor is going to be able to help you figure that out.
