Hi i am a 43 year old male who had a big reality check a few months ago when i went for my annual medical,i suffer with high blood pressure and have this medical yearly.

Anyway i was always around 17 stone for a good few years maybe 10 years I'm 6ft 1" but in February weighed in at nearly 19 stone, well any way i had to do something and i did,i cut down on the booze and take aways and started walking (power) with a little jogging then power walking then jogging for around 30 mins and also doing 10k (around 15 mins on the spinning cycle) also playing football twice weeky most weeks (the football/soccer has always been done).

Well 2 weeks ago i weighed in at 15stone and roughly 8 pounds and dropped 2 inches off my waist and looking as good as i have done for years, amyway i have just got back from a weeks holiday and though get on the scales and see what damage has been done.

Well yikes!! According to the scales i.m 16st and 7 pounds now don't get me wrong i have drank more than normal but i have still sticking to low c with a few vodkas and diet coke, yes more pints than normal but have kept up with not eating crap, yes there will be a few meals that i wouldn't normally have but have done my walks plus as a family we walked everywhere in Edinburgh and Blackpool and yes i think maybe a few pounds gained but no way i have drank and ate a stone in 7 days,if i had gone ott and it would of have to of been massively ott to gain that weight i could understand it but i haven't.

Can anyone explain this?

PS i have been having an apple around 9 oclock Monday to Friday for breakfast,2 satsuma's for lunch. Most evenings i don't have much a few cherry tomatoes maybe a few slices of wafer thin ham a chicken salad on Wednesdays and 2 oatcakes with weight watcher sausages and salad and usually have a normal weekend with few low calorie beers.

Hello and welcome! it's good you found out about the blood pressure, I mean so that you can do something about it. I have to speak personally, when I began losing fat a few months ago, my blood pressure was a bit high, about 140/92 I think they call it "borderline". Today with 35 pounds gone, it's 120 / 76. So, I hope that will be a goal for you to shoot towards.

On salt, when I cut out adding salt, (changed to potassium salt) and went on all low or no salt foods, I quickly dropped 5-6 pounds from losing the salt retained water. Today I take in about 900 mg. sodium daily. It would be good to become "salt aware" a lot of foods have a incredible amount of salt, lunch meats, cheese, canned beans in sauces, and whole host of foods.

Anyway, look around, ask questions!

Welcome to the forum.

Well done on losing 3st6 after that medical examination. That is 48 pounds. You did brilliantly.

I can imagine that you got a shock to see a 13 pound gain from a week's holiday.

I suspect that Knotty's mention of sodium is the answer regarding much of your gain.

You will have probably gained a few pounds in fat on holiday - that would be normal.

I would not be surprised if you have been having less water than normal and more sodium than normal.

I once gained over 8 pounds in three days where I ate less than normal (I had a nil by mouth sign over me for much of the time as I was in hospital) and it was all due to the saline drips.

All you need to do is get back on track - eat healthily at an appropriate calorie level and drink plenty of water (at least 1 ounce of water for every 2 pounds that you weigh). If you can flush the sodium out of your body the weight should go down if it is sodium...

I suggest that you read the following thread - it may help you settle in and make friends

Good luck with your project.

I have got on the scales on a Monday morning after a weekend when I have consumed large amounts of alcohol and the 'wrong foods' and seen that I have put on as much as 2-4Lbs over the weekend. The first time this happened I was shocked thinking did I really consume almost 2 kilos of fat.

The answer I found was on such weekends

i. i didn't drink as much water as I would normally
ii. ate a lot of food high in salt
iii. ate more red meat than normal which takes longer to work its way through your digestive system

I normally find that on Mondays after a party weekend I restrict my diet to green tea, lots of fruit and lots of water (4 litres) and exercise and I can normally flush out the excess water and crap in my body.

E.g.

Last Sat morning weight: 14st 13Lbs
Saturday: BBQ and beer
Monday morning weight: 15st 2 Lbs
Tues morning weight: 14st 13Lbs

It takes about 48 hours I find for my weight to drop back to normal

Hi thanks for all the feed back guys, yes i got on the scales at 16 and a half stone on Monday and after doing my work outs (walking and spinning cycle) was amazed that on the Friday i was 15 stone dead on.

I will keep on going but thinks have slowed up now, does any one know my ideal weight? I'm about 6ft 1".

Depends on your body type and how much muscle you have. I'm 6' 1 and aiming for 176 Lbs which is 12.5 stone.
