Hi I'm Laura a 28 year old mother of 2 wanting to lose weight so so much!!
I am 5'7 and weigh 13st 8lb and I have never been so big in all my life!! I would love to get down to 11st. I work evenings and weekends so getting to the gym (which I hate) is hard. I do try and swim every friday evenig if I'm not working.

I have not got a clue about counting calories or anything like that, but I want to learn and I want to be able to lose weight but eat and cook the same for the whole family:confused:

Any feed back support would be gratefully received!

Welcome to the forum.

Go to and get a free account. Set up your profile info and start logging all your food and exercise.

It will translate your food into calories and also let you know what nutrients there are in it.

Read the nutrition section and you will learn about setting those nutritional targets.

If I were you I would log in all your food that you have eaten today (with estimates because you cannot weigh what you have already eaten :) ) just to get a feel for how it all works.

As a first stab at calorie level - you currently weigh 190 pounds.

Most people will lose weight on between 8 and 12 times their weight in pounds for a calorie level depending on various factors including exercise level. The higher the better as it leaves room for manoeuvre.

Since you are not getting much exercise done I would start off at 11 times and see how you go... which is 2090 calories.

Log things quite carefully at first until you get into the swing of things and can start estimating.

If after a few weeks you havent lost weight - drop down to 1900 calories and try that.

If you can incorporate more exercise - it would most certainly be a good idea. You do not need to go to a gym to do some exercise. Maybe a DVD or wii fit may be an idea for you. I started off by walking. It would be really good if you could find a form of exercise which you dont hate.

It may also be worth trying to work out what you hate so much about going to the gym. It may be that you are self conscious and feel that you have never been good at that type of thing. There may be things there that you have never tried - but assumed that you would hate. I would have never guessed that I would enjoy aerobics when I weighed 21 stone...

Good luck with your project.

Hi Laura, and welcome!

I'll second the information that Omega gave you. Register for fitday and use it to start logging your food. Once you see what you're eating, it makes it a bit easier to see where you can cut back.

I also agree that you don't need a gym to exercise. Walking is a good start - walk as fast as you can to get your heart rate up, but dont' feel like you have to kill yourself. As you walk more, it'll be easier to walk faster and farther ... it builds on itself.

You can also read the sticky threads on exercise - there are some good ones on weight lifting and body resistance work. Those types of exercises are particularly good for people who are very out of shape and/or very overweight. A lot of them you can do more easily than cardio/aerobics and you'll see pretty fast results.

Hope you'll stick around and post more! :)
