hi, i'm laura. i'm a new member here. i'm looking for some support...i don't really have very many friends to turn to, and the few that i do have aren't very sympathetic. i'm looking for people to talk to and help me get through this change i'm making. i'm not necessarily a "big girl", but i am overweight and thus unhealthy. i'm not very good at knowing how to eat healthy, and excersize seems embarrassing. so i guess i'm just looking for help and this is the first place i came. i'm an artist. i focus mainly on painting, but i got my start with drawing. people keep telling me i'm good enough to make a profit from my art, but my self esteem tells me i'll never be good enough to be recognized. so, i hide myself from the outside world to keep from being rejected. i'm getting married in a couple years to the only person in my life that's ever been there for me. he's always been supportive and tries to help where ever he can. he's my best and closest friend, but sometimes i need someone else who is more understanding (sympathetic) to my situation. he has high metabolism and can eat and eat but never gain weight, and i don't think i've ever seen him weigh more than 120. i just want to be physically healthy in the hopes that i will be able to devote more time to my emotional and mental health with that out of the way.

Hi Laura, and welcome. I haven't gone to the diaires, but I assume you are also starting your own diary. Visit yours often and pick a couple of other diaries that you feel connected with to read and post into. Others will post encouragement and tips for you too.

You have what seems to be a reasonable goal to lose 30 lbs. How old are you and how tall are you?

As far as exercise goes, start walking 30 minutes a day. Over time, press yourself to walk faster (as if you are late going to an appointment). Push to get your heartrate up. Then, if time allows, extend it to 45 minutes. Quite a few people here, myself included, used walking as a significant part of their weight loss.

I've lost just over 30 lbs myself in the past two years. Good luck!

thanks for the tip, patty. i've thought about walking before, but i live in a relatively bad neighborhood so i'd have to travel to do that. not an unreasonable thing, though, if it's for my health. i'll have to see if i can find a place nearby. i'm 24, and i'm about 5'8". i weigh 192 right now, and my goal is 160-165. i read somewhere once that according to my height i'm "supposed" to weigh 140, but i was at that weight once before and looked kind of...waif-ish. i certainly didn't look healthy. that's what i want, healthy. not skinny. i'm not built for skinny. :)

HI Laura,

WOW!! I think we are in exactly the same boat, even guy wise. I looking for kind of a diet buddy, so we could offer support to each other through out the process of losing weight. I think it would be beneficial for both of us since we are trying to lose around the same amount of weight. Reply back if you are interested or reach me on AIM, my screen name is ricochetbaby1.

Well, Laura, you came to the right place :) I see you have the motivation ( this is the first and most important thing when you want to get fit) so, research this forum to find out how to eat healthy, how to exercise. At first, it will be a little bit difficult because you dont know your rutine, but you'll see that soon you'll learn to manage easily how you eat and exercise.Good luck! :)
