Hi! I am new

Hi my name is John. I am 24 years old I am 6'3 300 (you would never guess i way that much). I played football for 13 years so i have the "football player build". I have decided to try and get back in shape and lose hopefully alot of wait. I hope that these forums will help me with ideas and at least be a good motivation for me.

Hi, I'm a newbie here. I'm a 42 yo female and I work out at least 5 days a week, running, walking, running stairs. I started on the weights cuz I want to define my arms and abs but didn't really like them so that didn't last. I was just doing small 5-10 lb. weights at home. Do you find going to the gym motivates you more? I love going to the track cuz it's outside and haven't had a problem sticking to that routine. I'd really like to drop 10-20 lbs. also (gained 10 last Christmas) and wondered if I increased my workouts could I do it without cutting back on calories. I love my chocolate! Right now, I do at least an hour a day and try to do 1 1/2. When I was doing the weights I added another 30 minutes to my workout for a total of 2 hours.

You seemed to have hijacked this thread. You might want to start your own thread. You will likely get more responses that way.

Just exercising for a longer period of time generally does not result in more weight loss, because there is a point of diminishing returns where your body adjusts your BMR (base metabolism rate) to compensate or you screw up your hormones so much from spending too much time exercising at too low of an intensity level that you actually increase your body fat level. What you should focus on is reducing body fat not loosing weight. A proper exercise program coupled with a reasonable nutrition plan will accomplish that.

Joining a gym will definately help you stay motivated and also give you access to more equipment and weights of various sizes so you can appropriately select the proper resistance for each movement.

What exactly do you do for 1 to 1-1/2 hours per day? What is your typical daily food intake?

k...didn't mean to hijack a thread...new to forum. I run 1 mile, walk 2 miles, run 22 stadium steps 30x and 30 minutes with weights. (Have laid off the weights lately) And you're right...I'm no longer getting anywhere and that's why I thought I needed the weights. I don't want bulk, just want to lower my BF and want more definition in my arms/abs but not to the point that I look like I'm into weight lifting. I'm 5' 1", 145 lbs., shapely, and I know my BMI needs to be much lower. I think it's around 33-34% and should be around 28%. Is it possible for great abs after kids??? I'm asking cuz I had a c-section and it's never been the same since. BTW, I'm a junk food junky...I know that's bad! I like the slimfast drinks for breakfast and grilled chicken salads for lunch but will slip in a candy bar or cola. Have will power with my workouts...not when it comes to my chocolate!!!

Welcome and good luck.

On a side note, you spelled weigh/weight incorrectly twice, with different spellings...:D

Everybody is different so you have to find what works for you, both physically and psychologically. Yes, you can have a great body after kids and after 40, check out some recent photos of Madonna, although that extreme look may not be what you are going for, it is an example of how far you could go. Of course it took her many years of strict diet and lots of exercise to achieve that look.

Unfortunately, SlimFast is a pretty poor choice. They add a lot of sugar and not a lot of nutrition. Why not just a real breakfast of a couple of eggs and/or oatmeal? If you must drink your breakfast try to find a good whey protien shake.

Try substituting real milk chocolate for candy bars. Of course most commercially available colas are really bad for you. Too much high fructose corn syrup or even artificial sweetners in the diet versions. Could you switch to tea or something instead. Of course, good old plain water is the best drink.

tgja, welcome to the forum. As you will learn from reading the threads, certain folks on here have certain interests and specialties. Chillen is a 46yo dude with a sixpack - believe it! Flyinfree is a fanatic extremist and triathlete and will motivate you to go all out. If you are interested in cycling, I can help you a little there.

Carmen, my wife had 3 c-sections and through diet and exercise got rid of most of the the pooch and she is 49. You can do it girlfriend!

(As for Madonna, the jury's out on whether her body would be attainable at her age with exercise and diet alone or if surgery was necessary.)
