Hello everyone, I have never been on a forum like this before and am not really very computer savey so please forgive me if I dont know what I am doing. I think this is where I am suppose to introduce myself. My name is Gayla and I live in Indiana. I have fought being overweight my whole life (42) years old, and have started a new plan and am really excited about it. I believe this is what I can do to help me achieve my perfect body!! I have read a few of the messages on here and all I have seen is people talking about calories. Has anyone heard about the genetic key?? They use the glycemic index and I love it. I have lost one size in 3 weeks and am now maintaining. I am a size 10 at 5' 71/2" I believe I would like to get to a size 8 BUT Im not sure if gravity will allow me. I have been supporting my body with nutrition and drinking half of my body weight in water. That has really helped me. I do not work out just with my horses. Ok that is my story I hope I can be a help and encouragement on here for someone!! Oh Michael, you seem to be very knowledgable.
Thanks
Gayla.....

I've never heard of 'the genetic key'. However it sounds like it works with the GI of carbohydrates.

That's fine, but unless you are diabetic and have a problem with insulin adjusting your carbohydrate intake to avoid certain carbs is not going to help. Your body produces plenty of insulin to store the macronutrients you eat.

Now will a low GI eating plan affect how you feel and your general well-being? That is for most people an affirmative. Avoiding those sugar highs and lows can balance your emotions and your general energy levels.

So keep up with it just to maintain a healthy lifestyle. Your main goal should be:

a) to monitor your calories in/calories expended
b) eat a very moderated food plan and if you lose weight, continue, and if not, drop a portion here or there.

Both methods have their drawbacks and benefits. Monitoring your calories somewhat accurately takes work but allows more food variety. Eating a very structured diet on the other hand lets you ignore counting the calories and instead lets you adjust portions over the weeks and months to bring about weight loss.

At a size 10 you are not too far off from your goal. Try and restrict your sugar intake, don't binge eat and try and keep busy (exercise is best but an active lifestyle sure helps too).

Remember, your body is a reservoir of energy, extra movement and activity burns calories, no matter what. If you are a bit overweight, you have extra energy stores. Burn them off and try and realize that you really aren't starving as long as you maintain 1200 calories a day and have adequate protein in your diet (and essential fats and fiber too).

Michael, I am a wellness consultant and just getting into the weight loss arena!! I mainly delt with health issues. The Low G.I eating plan is a very healthy way of eating and since I have been eating this way I have seen the difference in the way I feel along with all of my clients.
The way the low G.I works is when your body has to work at digesting the food that is high in fiber and low in sugar it stimulates the metabolism which in turn burns fat. I didnt believe this when I learned it so I put it to the test!!I am amazed at how much I could eat and still loose weight. What was more exciting is I used to crave sugar and since I have been eating this way I dont. I have so much more energy and feel So much better. I have been on a wellness program for about 18 months and that changed my life, but with this Genetic Key eating plan I will never have to worry about yo yo diets again. Of course when I was loosing I didnt eat ALOT of food but I was always satisfied because of the food choices I made. The main thing I avoid is white potatoes, ( I eat sweet potatoes instead), white flour (I use whole grain), and sugar ( I use xylitol or stevia). OF course I eat 3 meals and 3 snacks every day. Im never hungry. I saw where someone posted that they only eat once a day. That is what the summo wreslers do. They eat once and the rest of the time if they do not eat there thrifty gene goes into storage mode and they store fat. I have no problem eating 6 times a day because I like to cook and I like to eat!! So how did you become so knowledgable about the body knowing about micronutirents?

HI Gayla,

That sounds interesting, I've never heard of how the glycemic index can be used..do you know of a website that has more information about it? I've only known (or been able to work with) calorie counting.

Who's in control you or the food you eat??

Hi Valley, I have a website but Im not sure if I can say that here or not. If you want to email me I will give it to you. I am also a free certified acredited coach!! I have recipes and can tell you where to find good healthy food that tastes GREAT! Im so excited how this has changed my life that I want to help others, that is why I looked for this forum. I want to share this with the world. If I would have known this when I was younger I would have never been a size 22! Food does not control me anymore I control IT!
Thanks G.............

Like i said, low GI diets are good for their health benefits.

However more fiber in your diet does not increase your metabolism. Fiber is not digested and it doesn't take long for the enyzmes responsible for carbohydrate breakdown to attach to the appropriate bonds.

I read a study somewhere that a complex carb that included lots of fiber might reduce a carbohydrate from 3.9 to 3.8 kcal/g due to digestive enzyme release. I guess that could be 4% of 50% of your calories...or turn a 2000 calorie day into a 1960 calorie one.

Shrug...it's not significant.

Food for thought....................

Hey Kevin, What I have noticed in this weight loss industry is that there are alot of fad diets and different ideas. It is a 34 Billion dollar industry. One Doctor says one thing and the other says something else.Who do you believe? Well, I have been searching for this answer for 20 years and I believe I have finally found it. It is no quick fix and all it takes is the desire to want to be thin. What intrigued me about the Genetic Key is that this eating plan is healthy. Most diets tell you to eat splenda or even worse than that aspartame, or saccharin. Please check out to find out what these sweeteners can do to you. I deal with these health challenges with my clients everyday and this is one of the first things I tell them to look at. Some of the foods that are recommended in these other plans are not healthy!! Now one thing I do know personally from being a wellness consultant for the past 11 years is that if you eat things that are healthy you CANNOT be overweight. When I say healthy Im not talking about eating raw carrots and celery all day long :)
I am 100% satisfied with the foods that I eat. I do not want to binge, because my body is getting the nutrients that it needs. People crave alot of food because their body isnt getting what it needs in the amount they are eating. That is one main reason America is so overweight. In July of 2005, 61 million people were reported as being obese. We are not getting the nutrition in our food like we used to 50 years ago. With all of the processed foods and green farming. We now have 89 autoimmune dissorders, 50 years ago we had 2. If anyone is looking for the answer to PERMANENT weight loss it is so simple. There is no counting calories ( I sure dont want to do that the rest of my life) just healthy choices and great food. There are sweetners that are low calorie and good for you.
Now for the fiber......
Humans are only capable of digesting a maximum of 7% of vegetable fiber if their digestion is perfect, and almost NO ONE has perfect digestion. SO fiber is comparatively difficult to digest, and slows the rate of conversion of the carbohydrates into blood sugar. That's why fiber is low glycemic and will help you stay in the rate at which you burn exces fat!!! Remember Kevin, yes calories do play a part in weight loss. Clearly starvation will eventually reduce anyones weight, but reducing calories without considering the glycemic index will cause the body to burn muscle as food and not fat. This is because there is far more nutrition in muscle than in fat. Does'nt that just make sense!!!

What is the key to PERMANENT weight loss? Isnt it whatever you are doing to loose the weight you can do to maintain it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I totally disagree that adherrence to the GI program is the difference in whether your body burns fat or muscle. Sounds like fear-mongering to me.

Otherwise, I agree that low GI foods are a good way to go.

This is ample evidence that nutritionists/wellness consultants/physical trainers should have to pass a mandatory exam before being accredited. That's some crazy nonsense. People like this shouldn't be allowed to feed themselves let alone advise others.

Christ.
