hi there, in the last two years or so i gained a lot of weight from becoming suddenly sedentary and from medication i was on for a stress disorder. i topped out at 249.5 lbs.
i'm female, 5'11.5", 40 yrs old, and i weigh 224lbs currently. i'd never really had a problem with gaining weight before (i'd always lose weight from stress) so i have a lot to learn about feeding myself properly and how to get into consistent exercise. my main goal is to create and live a healthy lifestyle and to be fit and strong.
i'm in my 4th week of changing my diet completely and walking on my treadmill consistently. i've lost 8lbs in 3 weeks since i've made these changes. I've made some target goals of where i'd like to be in a year, but i also have shorter term goals too. i'd like to get my waist measurement under 35" (to get out of that dangerous health bracket) and i'm working on moving from the obese BMI category to the overweight one and then to a normal one as one way to measure my progress.
i'm going to be adding in strength exercises this week in addition to the walking i've been doing. i've gone from doing 20mins at an average of 2mph on the treadmill, to 30-45mins at a warm up pace of 2.5 and my 'faster' walk between 2.7 and 3mph. i've gone from needing to recovery days a week to one. i know, i know, i'm not going to be racing in any marathons soon, but i figure i can only get better and better from where i'm at. it was a shock to actually walk again after being basically bed-ridden for two years but i actually find i really look forward to getting my ipod and going for a walk now.

i wanted to join this forum because i liked the info i was reading and the ppl who were posting. i found it really motivating to hear other ppl's stories and wisdom and challenges. i feel less alone. i've been housebound almost completely for these last two years (i have agoraphobia) so it's good to have some way to reach out and feel connected in some way to other ppl.
thanks to everyone who contributes to this site, u've all helped me immensely already.
oh, i also listened to some of the advice here and joined FitDay.com yesterday and boy did that help me! i was having problems counting calories before and doing the food log reassured me that i'm eating enough calories per day. if it takes me a year (or more) to get down to my target weight of 155lbs, i'm okay with that. i'm commited to making a lifestyle change for my lifetime, and i know i've got a lot to learn and experience along the way, but i believe i can do this.
cheers,
kate
