Hi!

I never thought I'd be interested in nutrition and general "theory of fitness", but I realized I might not need this belly after all. :) So I started googling and after some reading started counting calories. Man, I never thought simple muesli with milk had so many of those buggers! I mean, it's supposed to be healthy!

Anyway, if everything goes well and I don't lose momentum, I hope for a six-pack next summer. :D Wish me luck!

Mik :waving:

You can do it.

Hehe, you're right! I recently discovered that my favorite jeans from a few years ago that have been sleeping in the closet fit me again! Now that was a great revelation. :)
By the way, congrats on your anniversary!

Hi and welcome.

One thing I want to point out - don't be one of those people who confuses calories and health. The two are not the same thing and the amount of calories something has doesn't make it healthy or unhealthy.

You can drink 0 calorie diet soda and I guarantee it's not healthy.
OTOH, peanut butter is pretty high in calories, but they're good, nutrition packed calories full of vitamins and healthy fats.

Muesli is a prime example of that. Sure, I cup of it has quite a few calories. It also has 6g of fiber and 8g of protein. It also provides: 100% of your RDA of Vitamin B6, Folic Acid, and Vitamin B12; and 25% of your daily RDA of Vitamin C, Vitamin E, the rest of the B vitamins, and Zinc.

1 cup of muesli and 1 cup of milk is probably around 500 calories which is a perfectly reasonable, healthy number of calories for breakfast for most people.

If you're looking to show a six-pack, then you probably want to eat a more protein rich breakfast, so maybe no muesli for the time being, but don't just assume that calories are unhealthy. They're not.

You dont want to use JUST a calorie countier. Use something that tracks ALL your nutrients and logs not just food but activity. Something like does all of that. Most of us here use fitday or a similar product because as Kara said - the best results from honing your whole diet towards not just losing weight (and there is a lot of weight loss advantages to ticking those nutritional boxes) but all round good health too. Calories are just the tip of the iceberg...

You are both right! The thing was that before I started weighing and noting my meals I didn't realize that when I (being lazy and "on the run") grabbed several cups of said muesli during the day, there was no way to create any calorie deficit. :)

I totally agree in counting all the nutrients and activity. Regarding online calorie trackers, fitday actually looks great. Back in the day I tried several other sites but didn't really like them so I created my own, first as an Excel spreadsheet, then as a website. Feel free to take a look and comment. I wanted it to be as simple as possible to streamline the logging process. At the moment there are next to none foods or activities in the database (it feeds on whatever users log), but hopefully it will change.

By the way, if you have some time and would like to help test the thing, I'd really appreciate it. :) You'll find it at
