First post, yippee! I was so excited to find this place. I would love to find some new friends here. I'm in my late thirties, 5'9" and currently 212 pounds. My highest was 220. I'm excited to really change my life. I gained most of my weight after I hit 30. It was like my metabolism came to a screeching halt. It was awful! That, and no exercise was the magic combination to my weight gain.

I've been active and athletic all my life until I got married, had a baby and hit 30. Previously, I worked active jobs like being a baggage handler for Delta airlines. Loading a 757 is a great workout! I had also worked for UPS and there's a great way to lose weight, keep those boxes moving! But after becoming a stay-at-home-mom, things really changed for me. It happened so slowly, I didn't realize it was happening.

After seeing myself in more recent pictures, I had no idea who that fat person was! She certainly couldn't be me because I don't feel overweight in my mind...

Well, that was my wakeup call. I won't bore you all with any more details, I just wanted to shout out a friendly "hello" and I'm looking forward to getting to know you all...

Hugs!

Michelle
ps I can't wait to buy some cute clothes!!!

Hi Michelle, nice to meet you :)

I'm the same - I don't feel as fat as I am when I see my reflection. It always surprises me.

Melanie.

Hi and thanks for the replies. I'm really excited to have others to talk to about losing the weight. I've tried diets and failed every time. I get so frustrated. I bought a recumbent bike and was using it 45 minutes a day and it didn't seem to be helping me. Then last saturday I got a used elliptical machine and WOW, that's a workout! I think it just might be the tool to help me succeed this time. I've been using the bike for warm up and cool down. Seems to work well. I've got my fingers crossed! I also love the Firm dvd's because they don't have a lot of jumping around. My boobs can't handle that! Yet anyway. If I jump around now, I might just knock myself out! Ooooh, I can't wait to be thin!

What are you guys doing to lose the weight? You are both doing awesome!!!

These tickers are pretty fun. I can't wait to see my fishy swimming along!

I was recently on a local TV program and seeing myself on camera was a huge wake-up call... I could spend an hour and a half lecturing about what was wrong with me in the physical aspect alone! lol (not to mention now hundreds of people I know recorded it, so there is an archive of my "before"...:svengo:)
I'm sick of diets... been dieting off and on for years and years.. like you, I was very active and in shape until I had kids, then energy was zapped from me and I lost the motivation to eat healthy and move more. My boys are now 9 and 7, so I can't justify "just had a kid" as an excuse anymore... lol. I'm looking to make a lifestyle change, very gradual, very permanent... maybe next time I'm on TV it won't be such a shock... :willy_nilly:

My daughter just turned nine too. We do have a lot in common! I hear ya about wanting to do it right and gradual. I recently saw a show about ten folks who went on diets and afterwards, nine of them gained the weight back. It has to be a lifestyle thing. And I'm realizing that making smart food choices can be fun. I bought the Biggest Loser books and they are very common sense and wonderful. I really like most of the recipes I've tried from the cookbook, and many of them share the same ingredients, which I love. I like simple.

What were you on tv for, if I may ask? That's really cool. Were you nervous?

I know what you mean about the before pictures. They're painful, aren't they?! It will be so fun to take an after once the changes in me are noticeable.

I haven't read the biggest loser books yet... will have to look for them. I'm big on natural foods, preserving foods. I grew up on a farm and was raised organic from day 1. My mother was born in the wrong century... she still grows/raises 95% of the food items she and my father consume. So food has always been readily available to me. Good foods that were prepared in the not-so-good ways... lol I'm trying to change how I prepare the foods little by little.

I was on TV because one of my students nominated me for an award. I teach Cosmetology and she wanted to do something special to thank me. Apparantly the students love me.. lol I'm always doing things to make them laugh while learning... laughter is the best way to retain stuffy facts and vocabulary. I'm currently working on a book with my goofy stories for other Cosmetology instructors to use in thier classrooms. As far as the actual experience... it was a little embarrassing, but it was really fun. I'm not a shy person, so I wasn't nervous, but it felt weird getting an award for just being me... lol

Wow, how cool is that! The award and everything. I agree, laughter is good medicine...all around. And it's neat that your mom and dad go organic. I would love to do that, but the store bought organic isle is so expensive! My daughter and I are going to plant some veggies this year...not sure what yet, but it will be fun to eat stuff we grew ourselves.

Again, congrats on the award. It's fun to know when you touch someone else's life.

That will be great fun for you and your daughter... You'll be amazed at how much better real home-grown food tastes.. I have a tough time eating fruits and vegis from the store. They taste very bland. I REFUSE to eat meat from stores.... it's not supposed to have rainbow colors on it... :banghead:
I miss having a garden of my own... I live in a small apartment right now and can only grow a few smaller plants of my own.
