Hi everybody! Just looking for a little internet-based moral support :)

I suppose I should start by saying hello to everyone and thanking the creators of this site for setting it up, so hello and thank you respectively :)

I am a 19-year old university student in Canada, I live with my sister and mom and I very recently got engaged to my boyfriend (age 22), although we're not planning on tying the knot until I've done a couple more years of school and will (hopefully) be in a better situation financially. I am also in the Canadian Forces Army Reserve as a medical technician.

I joined this site because every time I've tried to embark on a serious attempt at improving my fitness or lowering my weight a bit, I fizzle out after a while. Hopefully if I have some semi-public way of recording my progress and if I have some more encouragement I'll be able to actually stick with it for once.

While I wouldn't describe myself as "fat", and just as a consequence of doing military training I'm not in abysmal shape, I'm not at the level I'd like to be at. I have a BMI of 27, and I couldn't run anything longer than a short sprint to save my life, and although I magically achieve at least the army's minimum standard every test, I'd like to do more than bare minimum.

I also have a certain young man who is unwaveringly supportive and loving, and I would really like to make myself more attractive for. He makes me feel beautiful and I want to truly be everything he says I am. Naturally, if I told him I wanted to lose weight, he'd just say I was gorgeous as-is and get worried that something was bothering me (happened before), so I think if I don't mention my plan and just went ahead and slimmed down that would be best.

I want to do this right I should set some attainable goals, so I decided to pick a weight that's within the normal range for my height and a running time for 2.4km that I think I could attain within 6 months.

Starting Weight: 143
Goal Weight: 130

Starting time (2.4km): too embarrassed to keep track... :p
Goal time (2.4km): 13min

WISH ME LUCK!

Good Luck! How are you planning on losing weight? I am thinking about doing the P90X workouts. I joined as well because I tend to fizzle out after a few days/weeks of good workouts, and thought maybe joining a forum where I could report in would help me.

Hi and welcome. :)

Sounds like you have some good goals in plce. Have you looked into weight liftings and body weight training? Since you're so close to your goal weight already, you'll see a lot of benefit by adding weight lifting to your program. It'll really help reshape your body and maximize fat loss.

I'd suggest reading the sticky posts in the exercise forum - there are some good posts about getting started with weights and one in particular for women lifting.

Good luck to you!

If you want to burn fat, then running is the least effective way to do so. I'm not saying don't run - I myself run and am training for a 5k coming up. But you told us your goals and my response is based on what you said your goals were - running will not aid you in getting fit and losing fat nearly as much as an exercise routine more focused on weights and body resistance training.

FWIW.

Thanks and I will bear that in mind, but I specifically mentioned having trouble with running, which is something I NEED to get better at. I put the fitness and weight-loss goals into two related-but-seperate categories because those are two things I want to achieve for different reasons.

I want to lose weight to better my health and appearance and I want to be faster because of the Canadian Forces' standards for my age category (Acceptable--14:26 - 12:36, Superior--Under 12:36), which I'm pretty sure I don't meet right now for that portion of the test. I don't mean that I'd just run, but that I'd add more cardio in general and running in particular to what I do normally.

I do want to get more generally fit and trim, but it's important that I work on running so I can achieve at least an acceptable performance.

Good luck with your project. I am sure that with hard work you will achieve both your goals.

I can well understand your desire to be able to run faster - when you are tested on this. We all like to know that we can pass such tests.

Thanks, and from looking at that ticker in your signature, may I say congrats to you--that's very impressive and I must say I admire the willpower of some people on here.

Thanks for your kind comment. We all have more willpower than we ever thought possible and really can make our dreams happen. It is just a question of believing in ourselves and working hard.

Just work hard and your dreams will happen too.
