Hi,

Matt, 31 from Staffordshire, UK

5ft8" , 23st 6Ib (328Ib's) and very unhappy.

I have always, as long as i can remember struggled with my weight. Used to do weightlifting in my early 20's , so not all fat but not all muscle either! I am actually naturally heavy(big thick bones, big wrist etc) and even when i would class myself as only a little overweight i was still 17st.

I started a diet today, 1500 calories and within 2-3hours i had bad headaches, heartburn etc

I dont do any exercise at all as i have a bad back (due to my weight), clicky knees (due to my weight no doubt) and ive suffered from depression for a while and find it hard to get going and motivate myself.

Would it be better for me to stick to a 1500 calorie diet and just wade it out? Or could i increase my calories to say 2000 and just try and do an hour walk morning and the same at night?

I cant see how i could eat 2000 calories and still lose weight. In fact i tried that a year ago , i stuck to 1600 calories and i started to lose a bit of weight. The weeks i cheated to 2000 calories i stopped losing. I was doing absolutely no exercise then.

Sorry for the long post, but i desperately want to get this weight off as i have 2 kids (4 and 2) and it guts me to see them playing outside and i cant even run around with them.

Regards

Matt

Have you tried a low carb diet?? I started at 348lbs lost 60 and quit. Started again on jan 18th at 317lbs and now I am at 284. I am never hungry..I have cravings, but never hungry..I too did not exercise because I am flat footed, but I started walking as briskly as I could for 30minutes at a time..Do you have access to a pool?? That might be something to consider. Its a great workout with almost no body impact. I also was only eating 1200 calories but found out i should be around 1600. So i upped the caloric intake and the weight is still comming off.. If you have any questions just ask.. I am by no means a doctor or weighloss expert, just someone who has been fat all of my life and have finally found a weight loss program that works for me.

Hi,

Thanks for the reply. I have read about the low card diets (atkins) and tried it a while ago. Loved it at first but packed it in. Cant remember why. I think the Atkins was too strict on carbs. Which low card diet are you doing?

Matt

The best cure for depression is exercise. The best way to do it is just to get out there and do it!

Exercise releases feel-good endorphins, so if you force yourself to go do 30 minutes of any type of exercise, you'll come out of it feeling better, guaranteed! :)

Hi Fatxcat,

Yeah that makes sense. Im going to set my alarm tomorrow morning for 6 and go for a walk for an hour to get started.

Good for you! I'm rooting for you. ^__^

I know I had a hard time getting into the swing of things in the beginning... I ended up joining a class, because that way I'd be "forced" to go. Well, after the first 3 classes, I looked forward to going every other day! It was the most fun I'd had in a while.

Also, if you're anything like me, you might want to set your alarm at 5:30 so you can get up at 6:00, lol.

lol yeah

Actually im not that bad at getting up since i had kids. Im just dreading it in a way cause i know within 5 mins of walking my back will start to ache off.

Matt

If your back and joints really kill you, you might want to consider cycling or using an elliptical. Both of those things are 0-impact, but still have the same benefits of walking/jogging

Hi,

I tried a cross trainer a while back and it really hurt my knees. I think what im going do is go for a wlak for 60 mins in the morning every day and then when i lose some weight put a punchbag up and go hell for leather for 30mins at night after the kids are in bed.

take a couple of ibuprofen 30-45 minutes before you start to walk, excersize etc. and sttretch first...seems to help.

I bought the Biggest Loser Family Cookbook and both my mom and I have started on the diet and we are actually doing really well with it. I used to have a major fast food addiction and now the smell of makes me sick cause I smell is grease. The biggest thing they suggest is to eat the right number of calories. They say to take your current weight and multiply it by seven. So for me I started at 295 lbs and began on 2000 calorie diet. On this diet you eat three meals, two snacks, and a dessert so you are never hungry. I have managed to lose 17 lbs in just shy of four weeks. If you have access to the cookbook where you live I would definitely suggest trying it out. The main thing to remember is that it isn't really a diet it teaches you more about eating healthy and what to look for in foods at the grocery store. Mainly look for sodium content as this will make your body retain water so try and stick to foods that are less than 300 mg of sodium per serving. Hope this helps and good luck.

I bought The Biggest Loser Fitness Program book when I first added weight lifting into my workout. You only need dumbells to perform a lot of the exercises and can start with light weight, which would be good if you have a bad back or knees. I've read through it a few times, and even though I don't use every exercise recommended in the book, if I need a different move to work a muscle, I go back through to find one.

It also has a lot of core exercises and tips from not only the trainers, but people that were on The Biggest Loser about diet and exercise. There is a portion about diet in the back, which would also be helpful.

I can't remember how much it was...probably like $10-$12 for a lot of information.
