Hey

Hey, my name is Jon and I'm 21 from the UK.

I've been trying for a while now to lose a few Kg, being about 15-20 KG over my normal weight. I'm fairly active, and also have a manual job at current, however my biggest issue is cutting down on what I eat. I try to stop snacking and eating less, but often I fail at this.

Any tips for me on this would be greatly appreciated,

Jon

One way would be to opt for lower calorie snacks. That way you would do less damage when you do snack... Fruit and raw veg can make a low calorie snack.

One of my favourites is that I make up a bowl of sugar free jelly in advance and throw in a couple of handfuls of fruit. The ones that I am making tonight are blackberries. They have to go in the fridge overnight to set - but if you havent made them before they are really easy to make.

You get the sachets from the supermarket - and you boil the kettle. Put half a pint of boiling water into a measuring jug and still in the sachet of crystals. Then fill the jug up to the 1 pint mark with cold water and stir again. Then pour into the bowl where it will set.

I often have a few sitting in my fridge just ready for when I want to eat something.

Have you checked that you are drinking enough water? A lot of people confuse feelings of thirst as feelings of hunger. Drink 1 fluid ounce of water for every 2 pounds of body weight and see how things go. That is the formula that a lot of people round here use for water allocation.

If you have a manual job you will probably get quite a decent calorie allowance. Log both your food and activity on and see your calorie balance. Check that you are measuring portions accurately because so many people make a mistake with that. There is nothing wrong with eating healthy snacks as and when you are hungry as I see it as long as you limit your total food and drink consumption to the calorie level that will give you weight loss.

Thanks for the advice and support :) Aside from healty snacking, what else are healthy and filling foods, as I'm cutting down what I am eating, I'm starting to feel hungry, and I'm not sure on what to eat to attempt to counter this a bit!

My best advice is to read the nutrition section - especially the sticky threads. That is full of great advice.

My own personal take on nutrition and some great rules to follow was used as bonuses in a challenge that I have just finished running. You are more than welcome to check that out.

Filling foods tend to be low GL (glycemic load) i.e. GI (glycemic index) per portion size. You may want to google these terms to get an idea of some of these foods. Most fruit and vegetables are classed as filling foods. Both the Slimming World and the now abandoned Weight Watchers core plans are based on this concept.

It is only a few days since you were asking about filling foods.

Weight Watchers has just sent this round - and I thought that you may find the link to be interesting since it is about that subject. You could find it interesting to put yourself on their mailing list. It costs nothing!

Generally if WW says that something is low in points it is low in calories.

Omega, your Jelly suggestion sounds absoultly gorgeous, however I don't eat geletin =( do you know if there are any Jellys out there that don't contain it? vegetarian Jellies haha, although I know this is pretty much impossible as geletin is the gelling agent (I believe?) I thought i'd give it a shot and ask just in case i'm wrong =)

A quick google of vegetarian jelly crystals got me to the following page:

There is a packet there which is marked "vegetarian" so I presume that it is ok for you - and it is a uk website so I am sure that you would be able to order it. Alternatively you could try the main health food stores / places where you get any other vegetarian speciality foods.

I have to say that I normally pay a lot less at Tesco - but mine do contain gelatine.

I hope that helps.

Thannnkyou =) Living in a small town in Wales means that I don't have an amazing choice of stores to shop at (no tescos or asdasss boohoo) so thankyou for the help, i'm sure I can order some thanks :)
