Hey

Well I guess this is my introduction.

I am 20 years old. Very over weight, have been since I started elementary school (which was when I was about 5 or 6). For the past two months I have been working out three times a day and eating right but can't seem to drop the weight. To be honest, I haven't lost any weight. It is very frustrating because I feel like giving up. I did go off the plan for about a week due to work being very hectic.

So I am here for a bit of encouragement. My parents eat horrible and since I am around them they expect me to eat that way also. I don't really know what to do.

I am going to try the diet again.

Can you work out to much?

Have you tried logging your food - to see what you are eating and work out things like your calories. Some foods that seem healthy (like cereal) can be higher in calories than you would imagine. It is quite easy to eat more calories than would be appropriate for weight loss.

You can get a free account from and set it up with your profile info. You then log both your food (and drink) and exercise and it works out both the calories that you are taking in and burning and calculates the calorie balance which is what gives you the weight loss.

Our weight actually varies quite a lot during the day and from day to day so it is best to always weigh yourself at the same time. It isnt just a measure of fat as our weight alters as we eat and drink. A lot of people suffer from water retention too which makes us gain weight. People can find that they gain weight if they have eaten something salty and a lot of ladies gain weight around the time of their period. I can quite easily gain 3 or 4 pounds around that time.

This all means that you may have actually burnt some fat with your efforts but weighed yourself at a time when you had gained some water.

Dont be discouraged. We always get rewarded at the end if we keep on exercising hard and eating really healthily at the right calorie level.

There is lots of great information about nutrition here. You owe it to yourself to eat healthily and not be influenced by people who do otherwise. You can take it from me that the reward of living in a healthy body is better than the taste of any food.

Sorry I didn't reply sooner.

Thank you soo much for the encouragement and the site! The only problem I have with the site is that it doesn't have the workouts that I do, all it has is the weight lifting. So I am basically going by that.

I have been wondering if it is healthy to do a 1000 calorie diet and then work off 1500 per day. I don't know if it is healthy or not to do that. I don't know what a healthy amount of calories intake would be per day for someone my size.

Anyway, Thank you for the encouragement!

I think that 1000 calories are probably way too low. It will be too hard to tick all your nutritional boxes with that. In the bad old days people used to talk about 1000 calorie a day diets but they are really hard to stick to and also hard to do so healthily.

Basically a rule of thumb for calories is to kick off with
calories = 12 times weight in pounds
and see how that works out for you.

Most people lose weight very nicely with that.

You dont want to cut things too low as you can end up getting stuck with your body getting used to the amount and you needing to cut things further to get things moving.

You need quite a lot of calories to make sure that you are getting enough protein, fibre, calcium, healthy fats etc. The nutrition section explains all about it.

If you would be more comfortable getting into the swing of things as a party game - nutrition is a key aspect of the Summer Shake Up challenge and you would be more than welcome to join in. The rules that we are looking at so far are listed near the top of the scoresheet thread.

Hi Kittye - Nice to have you here mate !

The one thing you need more than anything is what you already have ...... the desire to change your life.

Everything else stems from that. Without the desire and without the courage, change would be impossible.

Congratulation to you !!

Figure out what you want - figure out the best way to get there ..... then GO GET IT !!!
