Hello everyone, My name is Nathan and I live in Woodstock, GA. I am 24 years old, 200lbs, and 5'11. I need help with loosing weight. About 2 years ago, I suddenly started packing on weight without changing any eating or exercise patterns. I went to my doctor with my concerns and his response was "your not that bad...just get on the treadmill". So, I followed his advise and it did not work. I went back to him as I was still gaining weight, starving myself, and going to the gym. He refused to do anything for me. Well, about six months later I was diagnosed with testicular cancer and I have been told by a nutritionist that the weight gain should have been a huge warning sign that my doctor missed. So long story short...my cancer spread and I was on chemo for over a year and I have lost some of the weight that I gained not that I am cancer free. I gained a total of about 50 lbs over that period and now I would really like to about 25 - 30 lbs to reach a healthy weight of 170 to 175. It is almost impossible to loose weight. I eat healthy, im very active, I take the following suppliments that my cancer nutritionist has me on: Liquid B-12 1,000mcg, B-6 100mg, GNC Mega Men Sport multivitiman, D 1,000 i.u, Betafood, Dandelion Root 550mg, and probiotics. Can anyone please help guide me in the right direction to help me get back to a healthy weight. I am so tired of being overweight. Thanks for your help!

Hi Nathan,

I'm sure there are some unique challenges to losing weight with what you've been through, but I do think that it would probably be helpful to you to go back to basics.

That is ... start with calories and content. How much food do you eat each day and what kind of food do you eat? I'd suggest registering with a site like fitday.com or thedailyplate.com and logging your food. Doing that for a few days will give you a solid idea of how much you're eating and where your nutrients fall.

Once you know that information, it'll help you to figure out where you can cut back, or what you can adjust nutrition-wise. My suggestion is that at your current weight, you could eat around 2000-2100 calories a day in order to lose weight at a healthy rate. You should aim for a 40/30/30 split - that's 40% complex carbs, 30% protein, and 30% healthy fats.

Obviously exercise is important as well. Weight lifting and body resistance work is key ... followed by cardio to burn extra calories. Check out the sticky posts in the various forums to get more information there.

I'd start with that and see what happens. :)

Welcome! I'm new to the site as well.. If you look around you'll find alot of good info!! Good luck with your journey!! Stay positive!
