I'll just share my small story, one i've never shared with anyone.
in jr high i reached a weight of 178lb and im 5'6. in highschool i became more social and drank a LOT. pulling all nighters then working full time with very little food. i went down to 125lb but still wasn't healthy. but needless to say looking back on those pictures makes me cry.

unfortunately i've not been very active, became a smoker and now i'm at 186lb.

i need to lose weight BUT my problem is im SO motivated for the first week. then i'll lose about 5 lbs and just quit. usually when im at a wedding or something where i have to eat what they give me and it reminds me how good (unhealthy) food is.

i can never stay motivated for longer than 1-2 weeks. HOW do i stay motivated?

Hello and welcome to the forum!

Try to keep a food diary where you write EVERYTHING you eat down. Challenge yourself, how long can you be healthy? Just keep on going!!

Welcome Toolips! The easiest way for me to deal with functions like weddings where there is a ton of great food is to schedule it in. If you have advanced notice, eat light all day before the wedding and then enjoy yourself, with sensible portions, while you're there. If the gathering is unexpected, eat light the next day to make up for it.

Two things that have helped me stay motivated: Taking a "before" shot and putting it up against a picture of me at a size I was happy at. When you need motivation, compare the photos. The second thing is getting my husband on board. I had a BAD day yesterday and just wanted to EAT EAT EAT so he would remind me how much I've already lost and how great I'm doing and how even if I did eat the things I wanted to binge on, that they wouldn't taste as good as I'd hoped and I'd feel like crap (both physically and mentally) afterward. That it wouldn't be worth it. Having those two together has been helpful to me.

try looking at the before and after photos on this site, I find them very motivating and it really shows that it can be done.

I think the key is finding a routine you can happily live with that brings your calories under the amount your burning.

I don't like unrealistic diets that are a bit extreme like Atkins or cabbage soup or whatever the latest craze is.

My current plan is to lose about 3 stone (42 pound) and its going well so far, I've lost 14 pound in 5 weeks.

I've never been a breakfast person but I've started having 50g of porridge with milk in the morning which I find quite filling and its only 334 calories and this keeps me going all day until I have my main mean at about 6pm which is normally a decent mean like chicken and rice or chilli and rice at about 900 calories and a couple of large oranges in the evening.

I'm also doing 2 hours on the exercise bike in 2 one hour session whilst watching TV or listening to music.

Once I reach my target weight I'll reduce to one hour on the bike.
I don't need anything like the recommended calories for a man because I'm disabled and apart from the bike I don't get any exercise, which is why I've gotten overweight.
I've basically stopped all biscuits and snacks and replaced them with a breakfast and started the exercise bike which I'm happy with because the bike is also giving me a cardio workout as well as helping me lose weight.

good luck
you know you can do it

Hey toolips,

If you're looking for motivation, start reading through some of the other threads to see what people have accomplished and what they did to get there, you might find something that'll work for you. Also, starting a diary in the weight loss section can be very beneficial because you get lots of feedback as well as accountability!

Good luck! Keep us posted!

Ok I’m not sure if this is breaking the rules but it’s not something I benefit financially from but this tool seriously helps my motivation:

It’s a tool that can give you a rough idea what you would look like if you put on or lost 40lb. I have a picture of what they say id look like if I put on weight, how I am now and if I lost 10, 20, 30 and 40lb on my fridge and in my office and I can tell you now, when I think I can’t be bothered swimming today or oo that chocolate looks good I look at what I could look like if I put on weight, and I look at what I could be and think I don’t want to be fat I want to look like the -40lb picture and that keeps me going. Hope his helps a lot of people how it’s helped me! =)
PLEASE NOTE:
This is a visualisation tool not an exact image but it still is a great tool =)

thanks for all your support, guys! I just started my diary, i put in my picture of when i was skinny to look at it while i document my feelings and my workout routine/diet. i'm thinking i'll start off with 30 mins of fast walking daily. i also have a job where i do lots of lifting and moving around and being on my feet all day so hopefully that will help!

i've looked around the forum quite a bit and i think you all are so amazing for trying to achieve your goals and motivate other people! i'll keep you all posted :)

my diary at the time is a private one i'm doing on my laptop but maybe when i reach my goal i'll share it with you guys :)

another problem i have when i get unmotivated is (and i know this might sound a little conceited) "if boys like me the way i am, why should i lose weight?"
I have 3 amazing boys who say they're "inlove" with me, unfortunately i put food over dating. because im not comfortable with myself so i choose not to get intimate and because i can't love someone until i love myself.

I hope im not coming off too strong, but these are my personal thoughts. i sometimes get so miserable trying to change my eating habits that i just refer to these boys and think im fine the way i am. but i know i'm not.

I have a few pictures on my computer, quotes that inspire me. Whenever i fell the need i go and look at them. Smoking is deffinatly a huge issue, My friend (who has been a smoker for 33 years) tried a pill prescription reccomended by her doctor and within a week or two? and by the end of it she found it very easy to not light up.I cant remember the name of it but im sure it could be found online.
Start a movement around you, try and encourage the people you know around you to get active and eat healthy, avoid your weaknesses. It'll take off like a wildfire :). Good luck!

thanks kkrista! i actually told my sister about this site, and shes joining up too i believe :) she's going on the same plan i am so hopefully we can do this together!

about the smoking, i was a heavy smoker for 6 years. over half a pack a day. i've recently cut down to about 5-6 smokes a day. i'm going to try to cut down more as my weeks go on. it's hard but maybe working out will help :)

You need to do it for yourself, not for a boy. You do it for your own self respect, self confidance and for your health and to feel good.
If your doing it for others I don't think it will last.

i want to love myself. like i said i cant love anyone until i love myself. and i know its for me, i know i'll have more energy and be happier.

Good luck to you! I'm kinda in the same boat as you as far as where we want to be anyway. It's hard to stay motivated but let's see if we can do it. What's your plan anyway?

I think what we need to keep in mind is that weight loss takes time, its not something thats going to happen overnight. I've started 2 or 3 times before and given up like a lot of others have, I think it's because we expect to much to soon instead of keeping the long term goal in sight an being realistic.

good stuff hopefully we can help each other.
i'm doing 1200-1300 calories a day with more fruits and veges and more yogurt and stuff. cold green tea is good too. i used to put like 3 creams and 3 sugars in my coffee, but im already getting used to black coffee and liking it :)
also 30 min cardio a day to start off

yeah for sure, im shooting for smaller goals like 10 lbs at first, then another 10 and so on. im sure once i lose 10 lbs i'll get more motivated and be like "wow, i made it this far, i can finish!"
