hi everyone, i'm new. to the forum that is, not to weight loss. or weight gain for that matter. i'm trying to stop procrastinating and start losing weight for good, which i've been delaying for a couple of years now. hopefully this forum'll get me motivated the way i never could do on my own.

start yourself a diary - it's a great way to keep yourself accountable and to record your victories and challenges as well as letting us get to know you better.

Motivation comes from within... so ask yourself why you want to lose weight and hold on to that reason...

Welcome abord. Have you given yourself a start date yet? Make yourself a plan and stick to it. You will thank your self later.

This is a great place to visit. There are alot of nice people here and some are trainers, so feel free to ask questions and read other peoples diaries. It helps to let you know that you are not the only one haveing an issue with weight.

Later!!

wow, you guys sure respond quickly....

i've tried some of the stuff before, i had a spreadsheet tracking my weight & how much i ran each day. i wrote down how i was going to look once i'd achieved my target weight. i fantasised about looking in the mirror and actually liking what i saw. i imagined girls unable to resist taking second glances at the beach.

in the end, i always yo-yoed back to my previous weight, many times going past it. it's the same vicious cycle of depression/eating that so many have gone through.

anyway, i'll still keep trying now. i'm not yet resigned to the fate of staying fat forever.

Good. You can't ever give up on yourself. For me this site really helps keep myself in check. I write down every thing in my diary "at it again" and I don't want to have to put in anything bad. It helps to have others to keep you motivated as well.

There are many programs out there that have been proven to work. Try getting some info on these. They spell everything out from what you should eat to how and when you should exercise. They kind of take the guess work out of it. It may help? Let me know what you name your diary so I can drop in and say hello!!

Good luck and again welcome to the Forum!!

It's the same vicious cycle of depression/eating that so many have gone through.

While you are working on your diet plan and charting how much you run, give some thought to what you wrote in the above sentence. Eating while depressed is a way of self medicating problems that you have. Trouble is that after the emotional eating, you are left doubly depressed, because you feel bad about yourself.

So with all the focus on weight loss it is a good idea to examine why you are depressed, why you turn to food when you are depressed and how you can work on easing the depression or finding better methods to cope, other than eating.

Focus on prevention as much as cure. I wish it were easy, but it might help to get some professional help, somebody to help you understand why you are eating too much.

You can get yourself thin and in good shape, but until you conquer the demons whispering in your ear, "eat that half-gallon of ice cream now," it will be hard to keep thin and fit.

Best of Luck!

Sometimes the parameters of the *program* you establish for yourself are such that they are geared for failure.

Things like under-eating, over-training, etc will lead to nothing but frustration.

Of course, there are other things like emotional eating and the like that get in the way too.

Both can be *helped* here on the forum.

I hope you find what you're looking for.

i'm trying not to overtax myself while i'm just starting out. as for my diet, i'm doing little things now like cutting back on the overall portion by 1/4, not eating skins of fried chicken, eating less of the oily stuff etc.

i don't know if there really is a psychological problem for my overeating, but what i feel is that i just love to eat. in fact, i'm pretty happy while eating. it's usually after i feast, when i feel bloated or i realise that i've just gained >1 kg from a single meal that the depression kicks in.

actually, when i went jogging earlier today, i noticed that when i ate a meal later on, i became full with less food than usual. seems like it tightened my stomach a little. that's cool.

Hopefully

Hopefully things said will inspire you. Warning: I got bashed my first time out and I find a lot of moaning. Bottomline:Fat makes people uncomfortable. lol

Hopefully your experience will be tops. Are all overweight folks complainers? Is that the cause of being out of control with food consumption?

well i'm sure different people have different reasons for overeating or being overweight. as for being whiny, yeah it's sometimes true. i think that's probably because of the extreme frustration one can sometimes feel when trying to lose weight.

interesting point though, i wonder if having a positive attitude is essential in making that bit of difference that decides whether or not someone manages to lose weight.

I think that it makes all of the difference in the world. If you let yourself get frustrated you are more likely to drop out saying something like it is not working or that you are doomed to be big all of your life.

There is alot to be said for the frame of mind you have to have when you are trying to lose weight. Keeping the faith by telling yourself that if you just stick to the plan that it will work. This is most important when you hit a plateau, a day on the scales when you might have gained a couple of pounds, or even if you had a bad eating day. You just pick yourself up, dust yourself off, and jump back on the program. By giving up you are ensuring failure.

"Why do we fall? So we can learn to pick ourselves up!"

Always remember the words of Jack Handy...... I'm a good person, and darn it people like me!

Later!!

thanks, that's actually really good advice. i have hit plateaus before and stopped all physical activity for weeks. i'll try my best this time to stick to the plan if i reach a plateau.
