Just letting you know papwriter, that I have mapped out your post and know well your predicament. I can see a lot of the same areas in need for myself. I'll be working on resolutions that relate to your issues in my diary some time this day.
It's sounds like a combination of food, body clock & stress. Night shift is the worst for that kind of thing. That's the worse combination I can think of. You get a lot of skinny fat people working those hours as well. They look lean, but still have unhealthy bodies and minds to suit. More meaning diet is not that only path that many of us need to change, in order to regain our health. Some counties have given more thought than others, to the effects of working such hours and the relationship to circadian rhythm. I think most of the economically driven countries are quite lacking when it comes to considering the long term health of its workers. (workers are also somewhat blinded by their pursuits) ? Of course, just my opinion. I think the proposed band aid measures in these economically driven societies fail miserably. Bit like giant food corporations wanting Pizza listed a vegetable on the FDA Food Triangle. It's understandable why people have "struggle" to stay fit & healthy in such an imperfect world.
Understanding the predicament - what I face - helps me to better understand just how much more it's up to me, to make the changes that will count. It's like the old excuse still in use today ? Society profits from the poison it sells, and then says "It's your choice." Whilst I have my own opinions (forgive me if best left to myself) of the world based on that rather poor excuse; it is true that what we do and put in our mouths is very much up to us. [excluding those backyards that have next to nothing]
I can come up with reasons based on birth, predispositions and status with regard to choice, but where is the accountability in that.
My diary is very much about dealing with such struggles and keeping myself accountable to the decisions that have made me what I am today. If your still interested, I will relay in more detail my thoughts on several of your points brought up in your opening post. I feel they are very similar to mine and others on many fronts, yet no doubt many of us create our own stories and or see them in different ways. Some people suffer more than others before they are ready to make permanent change, while others are content to go up and down. Age has a way of making reality sink in, whether we like it or not; but even still then ... people seek to rub in some miracle cream, take some form of powder or pop a pill, rather than accept what they must. It's not that such things are bad in themselves, but the manner is which they are sought, that often makes skinny fat & fat skinny.
Take Care and good luck with whatever measures you put in place.
