Help

Basically I am 15 and about half a year ago I was fat and about 14.5 stones. I decided to change my ways and I stuck to a very healthy diet despite being round family eating chocolate and naughty things.

Now easter has ruined me and I have been binge eating since Easter Sunday, eating loads and loads and loads and loads and I've gone from 9.5 stone back up to 11.5 stone.

The scary thing is I can't stop, like I am eating a chocolate biscuit as I write this, but I really need some encouragement because even my mates are noticing at school that I am getting chubby again.

Please I really need your help.

Many Thanks

Dan

Hey Dan, welcome!

We are all definintely here for support! What did you do for motivation to quit eating "bad" foods the first time around?

Hiya

I guess it was how horrible I looked, and I'm slowly creeping back to that way.

Like literally this morning I've eaten 8 slices of toast with vegemite on, loads of chocolate and loads of chocolate biscuits and a load of prawn crackers. I will literally eat anything in the house. But I know I don't want to put on weight but I just can't stop eating and I'm meant to be going to a BBQ tonight and I 'm getting really upset and depressed about the situation. I really need your help guys.

Many Thanks

Dan

Hey Dan,

How did the BBQ go? My best advice would be to not expect yourself to be perfect all the time. Maybe what you did the first time around was a bit too strict and just wasn't something you could maintain for the long term? Instead of making a whole bunch of changes to your diet and/or exercise all at once, try just making one or two manageable changes every week or two. Only add another change when you feel that you've got the current ones under control. Some of the easiest changes to make in the beginning are ones that involve cutting back on something that you know you consistently have too much of. For example, some people drink 2 sodas per day. The first change for that person might be cutting down to 1 soda per day. They would need to work on getting consistent with that until they feel that they are no longer having "battles" with themselves over whether or not to have more soda.

Also, try not to say "I can NEVER eat/drink _______ again." Allow yourself some leeway (as I said before, you don't have to be perfect all the time). The more some people try to restrict certain foods, the more they tend to want them and eventually they may end up binging on those foods. Think of it as a percentage. Depending on where you're starting point is, you might make a general rule for yourself that you will eat "healthy" 70% of the time and you'll allow yourself to eat "whatever" 30% of the time. As things get more manageable, maybe you change that to 80%/20%, but never take it to 100% "healthy" - it's just too hard for most people to maintain!

One thing you haven't mentioned is exercise... what do you do in that department?

Hiya

Thanks so much I'm going to try that out as I really am binging too much, but it's going to stop today!

Exercise, I started the gym last week and I plan to do two 45 minute sessions at the gym each week as a minimum.

Many Thanks

Dan

Dan,

Just remember that we all have periods of loss of control and we all binge sometimes!

The key is to realize in the midst of the binge that you are doing it; then you can put a stop to it. You seem to realize what is happening to you as you reached out to this forum.

My best advice to break the cycle of binging is to change your lifestyle. If you watch too much TV, stop and go out. If you sit in your room and stay on the computer all day, then try something different - go for a walk.

It sounds like you are trying to do this already. Keep it up and don't let little failures get in your way!
