Help with toning please.

Hey my friend is about 260 lbs, and is pretty strong already. He's trying to tone down massively. He has 15lb weights at his house which I know is too little. He curls them at about 150-200 reps, 1 set. How bad is this really? I was suggesting to increase the weight to something he can do about 12-14 reps of, for 3, maybe more with different grips. Just want an imput whether or not the advice i'm giving him is accurate, and how bad 150-200 reps really is for you. Thanks :).

curling 15 lbs of weight does absouletely nothing for you....doing it 10 times, 100 times, 200 times....and it does hurt doing more.

With weight lifting less is more. You have to hit up compound excersizes, squats, deads, bench....and hit them hard. if he wants to cut, he should also implement HIIT 2-3 times a week into his routine.

Tell him if he wants to make serious gains, he better buy some heavier weights, or join himself a gym.

its bad. hes doing more damage than good. more reps is not a replacement for more weight.

as far as toning goes, there really is no such thing as "toning". I don't know how tall your friend is or what his body fat % is, but if he wants to show muscle definition he should start on a fat loss program.

yep. 100 reps with 15lbs doesn't do jack to make you stronger, or build the size of the muscle. it just trains you to do 105reps with 15lbs...110reps.

utterly pointless IMO.

and like junkfood says, all "toning" is, is reducing bodyfat to show off the muscle you've already built up. I'm sure you've seen beefy guys that don't have much definition between muscles. They have the same cut physique as the pro bodybuilders you've seen...but its all covered in fat.

my favorite example of this is Lee Priest, and Austrailian IFBB pro.
Here's him in the off-season: http://www.bodybuilding.com/fun/leepriestinterviewpics1dbig.jpg

here's him in competition season:

same dude, with bleached hair. same amount of lean muscle mass. DRASTICALLY different levels of body fat...probably around 20% in photo 1, and 5% in photo 2.

(btw, I've met Lee. He's only 5'5" tall, but around 215lbs during competition!)
