help please

hi to all i'm new here so go easy on me! i have a complicated question. i am a 29yr male from Barbados (in the Caribbean), and i am also a Haemophiliac (a bleeder) and was in an accident when i was younger and developed arthritis in my knee over the years i have put the pressure on what would be the good knee, this then too developed arthritis so i now have in both. i cannot run, jump and i walk with ugly limp the thing, one knee is slightly more flexible than the other and the less flexible is stronger than the more flexible recently i visited the doc because of swelling, severe pain and stiffness to the point i cannot even walk or stand this keeping me from work (i am a chef), this happens at least 3 times a year for the last 3-4 years on this occasion the doctor told me for about the third time i should get a knee replacement surgery. i have decided that i want to avoid this and it is time for me to get healthy and fit, i tried regular exercise programs to help my knees but they didn't work cause it injured my knees in the way i mentioned before. i was thinking that with the right diet and program it can work and i may regain some of the health i lost over the years but i don't know where to start i would like some direction as to which might be able to help with my fitness goal get both diet and physical health in the right shape.

Hey Lee, welcome to the forum!

A combination of improving your diet and figuring out some way to get exercise will probably be helpful for you.

For diet, I would suggest reading this article Nutrition 101 – www.body-improvements.com to help get you started. It's long, but worth it.

As for exercise, have you tried water exercise? Swimming, water-walking, or water-running are all good options that take the impact off of your knees. I would suggest deep water pool exercise, using a floatation belt, where you're not actually touching the bottom of the pool. (Have a go at deep water running - body+soul)

Do you have access to any gyms? Some facilities have "arm-bikes" that you can use for cardio, which look something like this:

Have you checked out the Journal section? Tracking your diet and/or activity and having people check in on your progress and make suggestions as you go can be a great way to keep you on track!
