help me to stay on track!

Hey there.

I never thought I'd do something like this online forum business for inspiration, but here I've found myself reading everyone else's tales and it seems rather motivational. To give some background, I've always had an athletic build after being a swimmer for a long time, but now I'm finding that I'm not comfortable with my weight. I'm not sure how much of the weight can be attributed to muscle, as I seem to gain that easily, but regardless I'd like to lose the fat and some muscle if I can. I went away last summer and the food was awful, so I gained for sure, and this year the cafeteria food, while I did manage not to gain, made sure my weight stayed a steady 145. I'd like to get this down to somewhere between 125 and 130. I'm 5'5, so that seems normal to me. Maybe lighter if we get going.

Alright. For some reason I feel like I'm speaking as the voice of someone else, this is a weird feeling.

All I'm going to do here is post daily exercise and eating.. experiences? I have shin splints at the moment, so running is unfortunately not an option. Unfortunate. THUS, here we go. Oh one more thing, I also work in a place where bad food is readily available and free for us, so that adds some difficulties in terms of temptations.

Yesterday (June 28)

Breakfast:
Bowl of shredded wheat with skim milk, banana on top

Lunch:
bag of fruit, bag of vegetables, honey raisin multigrain bagel with butter

snack:
piece of whole wheat bread toasted with margarine, another toasted with margarine, cucumber, and salt and pepper

dinner:
haddock, rice, green beans

after dinner:
frozen yogurt (I caved and did this, it was a bad call)

for drinks: lots of tea,,

Exercise: 5 minutes running/ walking, I stopped because it started to hurt when I ran, and I'm trying to get better. SO I did some crunches and hopped on the stationary bike for 30 minutes.. not enough I know, but something at least. Also, I worked 7.5 hours with 15 minutes off, and that's on your feet 100% of the time walking around doing stuff, doing loads of dishes, etc.

June 29:
breakfast:
shredded weat w/ skim milk, banana chopped on top

lunch:
spinach salad with vinaigrette, bit of goat's cheese, and roasted red pepper
Honey raisin multigrain bagel with little bit of butter

other stuff at work: (BAD)
2% milk iced latte
chocolate milk / coffee / ice / chocolate syrup concoction
nibbles of a cookie, muffin (literally a quarter of a bite of each, but bad nonetheless)

haven't eaten dinner yet, but I find if I can actually MAKE it to dinner, I don't eat badly afterwards.

Exercise: going to the gym in 5 minutes after having done 7.5 hours of work again. I'm planning on doing the elliptical for 45 minutes, possibly 30 with 15 minutes on the stairmaster.

So, any thoughts? I'm finding it hard to cut out chocolate entirely, but at least writing this down makes it easier to track when I'm going wrong and get some advice as to how to lose these pounds, they're being difficult for sure and I'd like to lose a fair bit (obviously not all, I want to do this healthily) before the end of July. Is it awful to have a couple small bad things each day? I've heard you can eat a little chocolate and have it not even register with your body, is this true??

Thank you for any advice or imput you guys have, I really appreciate it. The success stories here are really awesome.

Thanks in advance.

every diet book i've ever read (and they've been sooo effective so take this with a grain of salt) says you shoudl never deprive yourself... for chocolate... iv'e read that you should get good chocolate, and just have a little bit of it of it.. and that little bit satisfied the craving... (dark chocolate is also supposed to be good for you)

Good luck - we're here for support - encouragement - a kick in the behind - whatever your pleasure is... :) and welcome

Nicole, I am a chocolatier so I can NOT tell you chocolate is bad for you! LOL BUT I have heard the same thing as maleficent - Its good for you IN SMALL QUANTITIES and dark is always best. The reason dark is better: there is less butter fat and more of the "good for you" naturally occurring chemicals in it due to the higher amounts of true cocoa.

Okay, lesson dismissed for the day :p:D hehehehe Your food looks really good! Make sure you drink plenty of water. I see you drink tea. If its caffinated, make sure you drink 1 cup of water for every 1 cup of tea (as with any caffinated beverage) since caffine actually dehydrates your body.

Have a great day! BTW, the best time to have chocolate is after you work out (just a little!!!) b/c your body will need a little boost and will burn the chocolate cals. ;)

aujourd'hui!.. thus far

Alrighty.

I didn't work until mid-morning today, so I went to the gym, only did 30 minutes total (15 elliptical, 15 stairmaster), but figured that was okay because I had done an hour yesterday and was sore, and am going for a swim in a bit.

Soooo

Breakfast:
- big bowl of shredded wheat with skim milk, banana chopped on top (classic)
- small piece of french bread with peanut butter
- a piece of watermelon

Lunch:
- half a bowl of red pepper chick pea soup
- peanut butter sandwich on french bread
- fruit smoothie (just fruit and orange juice)
- a few pieces of watermelon

I'm hungrier today. Does your body do that when you start exercising a lot more? Will it adjust to eating less? Stomach shrink-age going to happen??

Anyway, over and out.

Actually one more thing, if people actually read htis! Is it not possible to drink too much water? I've been told by a couple doctors that drinking 10 glasses a day can actually do bad things to you, as it dilutes your blood stream too much and doesn't allow oxygen to get to your brain... seems to make sense to me. Anyone know if this is true?

Doing a GREAT Job!!! Keep it up.
As far as the Water goes, I also heard the same thing, but not by a Doctor  Well, have a GREAt Day and STya POSITIVE!!!!!!

There's a condition called hypo- something or other medical - or laymans terms- water intoxication - where you've just had too much water.. and the potassium and sodium in your body are at too l ow a level... from what I've read it tends to happen to marathoners and other high level athletes (and i've also heard of it happening as part of fraternity initiations as well - them thinking - it's water how bad can it be)

There is such a thing as too much water... 10 glasses? eh - i dont think that's it...

How much water should you drink in a day? the formula I've seen is 1/2 an ounce for each pound of body weight. How you can really tell you are drinking enough? Check what color your urine is.. if it's dark yellow, you are dehydrated.. it should be a very pale yellow... almost colorless..

Have a great day..

I have heard too much water can be toxic, but as for 10 glasses, I've exceeded that most days and not had a problem. I drink around a gallon a day - its hard to get THAT much and I felt fine. I can't imagine anyone getting too much more than that without serious chugging but I guess it could happen

hope you've had a great weekend :D

Welcome, Nicole. I have heard of that same syndrome Mal is talking about in connection to Frat Hazing. I think you really have to drink gallons for it to be harmful. You food looks great! I hope your condition improves soon so you can run...sound like you really like to run which is excellent. Good Luck with your goals.
