Help, I'm a newbie! (ab and thigh advice needed)

I had major spinal surgery at a young age and therefore am I bit more delicate than some. My physical therapist informed me, it would help my lingering limp/backpain if I were to build ab strength (to take pressure off my back) and strengthen my thighs. (and also, who doesn't want a flat stomach) I need suggestions on how to do this without killing myself (I'm currently burning myself out in the work out area and seeing no results)

I don't like the word "diet" as I'm not trying to lose weight in the number sense, just tone. But any tips on eating habits would also be greatly appreciated.

Thanks so much!

Have you considered yoga and pilates, they are both very good for developing a strong core and I find yoga in particular a really good all over workout.

Did your physical therapist give you any specific exercises or limitations on what exercises to do?
You say you haven't seen results...do you mean strength results or visible results? What are you doing for exercise now?
There are countess exercises you can do to strengthen thighs and legs...I'd be happy to give advice if I had a little more info.

Not seeing strength results or visible results. He gave me 4 exercises, which I've been doing. But I suppose because I need to be more careful with myself of course my exercises need to be less strenuous, therefore causing slower results.

How long does it tend to take to see/feel results with pilates. I've been doing a 20 min DVD for a month now and see/feel nothing.

I tend to do pilates for about 50 to 60 minutes each time, I use either Karen Voight or MTV mainly as I feel they are more challenging than some other dvds I have come across.
Normally you will feel results pretty quickly and by results I mean you will feel your posture has improved along with your abdominals. I prefer the results I get with yoga but I like to mix my routine up and incorporate many different forms of exercise.
However I suggested pilates as it is gentle as are some forms of yoga.

Karen Voight also has a dvd, which I also love, called yogasculpt which incorporates 20 minutes of yoga and 20 minutes of pilates.
