help! how do you chat??

Ok so I have no idea where to post this question but I see this little chat button on the top of my screen and I push it sometimes and it takes me to a room and sometimes there is a person there but most of the time I am alone. I have always wondered how to chat and how to use that feature. It would be nice to talk to people in a faster way than posting and reposting. Are there groups that meet at certain times to chat?? How do we know when?? Help!

the chat feature doens't get used a whole lot -

what you might want to do - is post a time where you will be in chat and invite some people to join you... you could use your diary for that post -
