I had a wake up call last Friday. I saw my doctor and I have to lose 3 stones … 42lbs in a year, because I am having trouble with my hips and knees. I will be 69 next Friday, so it's time to get my life under control. My doctor does not want me to go on any 'fad' diets I must eat and cook healthily, and aim to lose no more than 2lbs a week

Welcome to the forum :)

Hi, Tasi & welcome to the forum. That sounds like very sensible advice. Slow & steady is the best way to go. Were you given any dietary advice?

Welcome Tasi!

It looks like you have a good plan, that's a great start. I am new here as well, the best advice I got when I started was to start a diary thread and post my food every day. It helps me with accountability, you might want to try it.

I've always like the stone as a unit of weight, here in the US nobody uses it. Only problem is when losing weight it takes a long time to lose one, lbs go faster.

Best of luck.

Welcome to the forum! It sounds like you've been given some good advice! Have you taken a look around the forum yet? You might be able to get some ideas from what has worked for other members. Good luck!

Welcome to the forum!sounds like a very sensible weight loss goal..plenty of info here and good people!start a dairy so you can hold yourself accountable..

i'm sort of amazed at the number of 60+ year olds here. i am 66 (and one day!) and i have already had two knee and one hip replacement. those out of the way, i was still 50 lbs over a healthy BMI so i decided to get smarter about nutrition. today i am at 170 (BMI less than 24) and my joints have never felt better... well, at least not since i was in my 30's.

my diary pages aren't that long and i have a lot of pictures. most of the information on how i did it is there rather than repeat it here. good luck.

Good for you, Tasi! I'm really glad you have a doctor who really keeps an eye on your well-being, too! Looking forward to reading about your gradual progress toward your goal. :)

Good luck and welcome! Sorry you had to get a "wake up call", but honestly it's always something that gets us started... some form of motivation that finally gets us to buckle down and make that real push to make a permanent positive change in our lives, so let's hope this is that for you!
Lots of good info to read about here, but your doctor's suggestion to be slow and steady and avoid fads is certainly top notch.
Just start eating healthy and keep tabs on what you eat, and you'll see the weight start to slowly disappear. You can tweak things as you go along.

..., and aim to lose no more than 2lbs a week
that is a good attitude/ goal and let me add that even if you don't think it sounds like much, you will really start feeling the difference even after a few weeks (once you establish a downward trend... that sometimes takes the first 1-2 weeks). one of the best first feelings will be your clothes seeming a bit looser. if you have a favorite shirt that's a little large on you, start wearing it now before it gets too big! i've had to retire a few of my favorite t-shirts.
