Hey all,

My name is John. I'm 23, 6'2" and I've finally decided to stop dieting and start losing weight. (Yeah, you read that right!). I've done diets in the past, I never feel good, I always crash, I always splurge. It just didn't work. It's not that the diet didn't work, it's that I didn't work. In fact, I always hate those weight loss commercials advertising a pill or something that say "Because for some people, diets just don't work". No, they do! WE just can't handle them! We don't have the will power or the motivation, because a drastic short term change doesn't eliminate a long term problem.

I've known it all along but I've finally done it; and made a lifestyle change. I made it a gradual process though, slowly cutting out things that do me no good and add nothing but fat (excess sugar, soda, sweet tea, etc., excess carbs). Then beginning to reduce portions. This process began on the first of July, at 331 lbs. Today, I'm at 294. The last few weeks have been the first 'full throttle' weeks, losing around 3lbs a week. Doing everything all at once. I'm paying attention to calories, but more to cut out 'useless foods' that are tons of calories and no nutrition (don't miss 'em), and to get an idea of what my portions should look like. Also working out daily. Twice a week is a 'hard workout' with a treadmill with incline, some weight lifting, rowing, etc. Then the rest of the week is cardio, walking, etc. I have one of those sedentary office jobs, but I've found that I can walk a lot by just walking whenever I'm on the phone or don't need to be at the computer. (I don't use an office phone, just a cellphone with a bluetooth, so it's easy to power walk around while talking on the phone). I eat most of my calories during the day, and a small, light dinner (usually fruits and veggies with a little bit of lean meat; I've found that I can load a salad with peppers and veggies and a little fruit and no dressing and it tastes great!).

My wife has been doing a lot of this with me; though she's not overweight. Actually she's like a pound shy of an 'ideal' weight for her height. But she does feel a lot better now that we are eating better. But it is nice to have a 'partner'.

It's amazing what a difference it has made. My wife and I both ride motorcycles, and it's amazing how each week my motorcycle seat gets more and more comfortable. Less weight on the tailbone I guess!

Anyway, I joined this forum to get some more ideas and tips as this progresses. Been reading and lurking but figured I'd introduce myself. You know I did a lot of things different this time. Nobody but my wife knew I was doing ANYTHING differently; which makes it feel really incredible when people tell me I've lost weight.

Thanks for having me! My goal is to be down around 175 by the end of next summer. If I don't make that goal? That's fine, as long as I'm going down. But I like a challenging goal, and at a little over 2lbs a week I think that's a pretty attainable goal. I've decided to stop dieting, stop losing weight, stop working out to lose weight, and start just living healthier. And it's doing everything that I couldn't do before!

-John
