I'm Lelu and I'm trying to lose 50 pounds to be in the female weight norms but mostly I just want to shape some parts of my body.. And I seem to be doing something wrong cause I'm either staying or going up in weight with no change in eating habits or workout. I believe I'm need some tips..

There is a certain amount of calories a body has to eat to sustain its weight. It would be easier for us to help you if you could tell us your height and weight. (This would help us understand what your caloric budget would be).

I'm sure some here will offer advice without knowing the caloric budget.

If you aren't comfortable showing your weight/height to us then go here http://www.fitness.com/tools/bmi/ and tell us the values that it gives you.

I'm 5 feet, 8 inches, and weight 220 pounds the last time I was weighted. I was looking thru the forum and found the calculate thread. It says I need 2484.36 maintenance calories... I don't even think I can even reach that on a pig out day.. The highest I have ever gotten to without becoming sick is maybe 1500 calories.

I eat alot of fruit and vegetables, meat once every three days, and bread, rice, potatoes, and maybe a pickle and potato chip sandwich when I have a headache. I tried the small snacks and stuff... but it didn't help.

I lift weights, take 45 minutes walks, squats, belly dance, bike, and alot of woodworking so lifting, sawing, hammering, and doing the work of three often..

It looks to me like you're eating too many carbs. You should probably eat more meat. I'm sure somebody here can help you with the figures, but fat is used to absorb vitamins and minerals. Carbs are burned as a first-come quick-conversion energy. If you're burning tons of calories you might just be burning carbs?

I personally like to eat more fat and protein than I do carbs. Fiber is still important so do not dismiss that.

We will see, I'm thinking of making one of those journals to keep track. My doctor says I'm not taking in enough carbs and wants me to add more, but like I said will see.

Your doctor said you weren't taking in enough carbs??? What?! I went to a dietitian once and she told me that you shouldn't consume that many carbs!! She even told me to avoid fruit because it's like sugar-water.

I'm an avid chicken and tuna fan. If you like tuna maybe you could try adding a small tuna sandwich or two and swapping it in to see if it helps any. The whole wheat bread would still be carbs and the tuna has a slight amount of fat as well as a nice chunk of protein.

*nods* Thats sounds like a good idea.. I should of got tuna while I was at the store.. I love tuna, I just need to get a can opener.. I swear I belong in the dark days.. I can't even use the electric can opener right.. I'll add both of those to the list.

Well I made a journal here and I will be trying to keep real good track on what is going on.

Don't feel bad. I can repair, fix, and build computers with relative ease, as well as deal with hardware and software problems. I don't even know how to use an electric can opener. :] The way I see it......You burn less calories by using one!

I reported the post so that probably helped! Is 170 your ultimate goal, or do you want lower? Not that it affects anything, just draws it out. Dieting isn't something you can stop doing. It's more like a lifestyle change and an adaptation into a new being. So you have to stick with it for a very very long time!

I'm not dieting, I'm learning to increase my workout. If I cut anything I'm back to eating nothing most of the time.. I'm a forgetful eater.. I learned it as a child to keep me from worrying about food. I have to sometimes be reminded to eat.. But 170 is a beginner goal, it will get my foot in the door to where I want to be but mostly I want to do things I can't do right now. My weight makes it hard to do trails.. I can't rock climb.. and I can't run.. The running part is from my weight but also I need to figure out ways to work my leg.. I broke it as a kid and it was a homemade cast.. Its straight but not as strong as its needed.

I am new here too - just wanted to come in and wish you luck!
I have heard that people who try to increase their workout to lose weight end up getting frustrated and giving up because a) the loss is very slow and b) as soon as they lose motivation a little and slow down with the exercise the weight jumps back on. It might be worth reading up on things like low carb diets (although you do need some carbs!) I've heard many people say they don't feel hungry at all on it even when before they were carb lovers lol
What are you going to do to increase your workout?

My bad. I think that if you cut the carbs and increased protein you'd see a lot of change. Really, you should be able to just cut back on the carbs, and walk, and not hit any plateaus, albeit a very slow process.

For leg strength...there really isn't much you can do as far as the bone goes. Your best bet is to try out the carb cuts. You need to stay away from and non-whole grain pastas, breads, etc. My honest opinion is don't eat fruit either.

I'm not a professional, I've been hoping for second opinions this entire time.

Have you tried cycling with low resistance? (not a real bike, an exercise bike)

Exercise bikes are far easier on the legs than BOTH jogging AND running. Running, if I remember correctly, essentially places four times your body weight worth of pressure on the knees.

Also, you could get in a swimming pool, float on your back, and do bicycle exercises. You can do it on ground too, doing it in a pool can open you up to more opportunities!

Its why I'm here. I'm first going to just increase my workout at first, I think my problem is I only did anything when I had no work to do and I think that is what did me in. With writing down what I eat and what cals and carbs it has should make it better but see if I can switch things to help.

I have heard that too but most people I know that say that still eating mcds eight times a week.

Your body is different from mine and when I went off fruit I gained ten pounds and kept it til I went back to fruit. I have no access to a swimming pool but a bike when I'm not sleeping at my workspace. I eat whole wheat bread, pasta, and rice when I can. I do think I'm going to try to eat more tuna.

I understand that my body is different than yours. The reason fruit is considered bad to many is because it's essentially sugar water. (It isn't necessarily bad per-se, but the balance of calories per gain is pretty low). How many fruits do you eat a day? If you eat more than one, replace just THAT one with a little tuna, and see how it works. You could have gained weight because of your body going into starvation mode due to a lack of calories, carbs, or a mix. (I've been assuming the entire time you just eat ONE fruit a day).

There are other ways to increase leg strength. Some examples would be leg exercises using weights. Lunges would probably work in your situation. I'll respond as I think of more leg exercises!

Again, I apologize for the fruit thing. I was thinking you ate just one every day.

I deals, but I normally eat three a day, unless I can get some fresh vegetables. I think when I stopped eating fruit I also wasn't eating good food. I was visiting part of my family and even tho I stayed in portions they add alot of butters, oils, and whatever is cheap.

The best way to find out what your body responds too best is to experiment. I want to add that if you cut a fruit, or soda, (Soda is bad for you too! It's actually far worse than fruit!) you need to replace exactly the same amount of calories or around there with protein/fat. You can't just cut!

And yes, proper portions won't do your body as much justice as giving it what it wants. That's why I say experiment! It might like certain percentages more, but I don't think it wants so many carbs! If I personally eat carbs (Which is the true reason I never lost weight, I ALWAYS ate carbs)....I would get heavier.
