Just thought that I would say hello. I am currently losing weight so the decision to do something has already been made, but it's never too late to get support from like minded people. Before I started losing weight I was 311 lbs (I'm just over 5foot8) and so far (since January) I have lost 64 lbs on the Core programme with Weight Watchers.

If anyone is thinking of joining Weight Watchers I would recommend it. I find that I need the discipline of being weighed by an objective observer. For a long time I was stubborn about joining, seeing it as a huge, faceless, money-making corporation, but the leaders themselves are real people and genuinely try to help.

The main reason I have joined the site is because I have been doing well but lately have some health issues that are going to weaken my resolve. They will be sorted in a month or so, but until then I won't be able to be as consistent as I was and I thought that joining a forum such as this would help keep me motivated.

My goal is to lose 140 lbs, so I am nearly half-way there. I don't have a time limit on it because then I would just get depressed when I don't make it!

Anyhow . . . hello out there.

Hello! *waves* I wasn't on this forum even when you posted this, lol. But I keep seeing your posts in the forums and you are so funny and just plain likeable. So I was curious about your story and went to see if you had a journal and found this is the only thread you started. Guess it just got bumped a month later :)

GOOOOOOD LUCK!!! I am ROOTING FOR YOU!!!

1000Monkeys,

I'm definitely here for you!

I think you have done a fantastic job with your weight loss so far. I am like you and am not giving myself a timeframe with getting to a healthy weight; I just hope it's before I end up with some weight-related disease.

Why don't you let us know what you have been doing in the past and where you are restricted now - maybe we can pool together and give you some fun and reasonable alternatives. I certainly don't mean to pry, though, so I'll let you decide what you want to share or not.

Best,
Tarazan :Angel_anim:

Thanks everyone.

Wow! No replies to this for ages and then a load all at once!

Still going well using the core programme on weight watchers (down 75lbs as my ticker should show). Essentially there's a list of foods you can eat and a list of foods you can't (or shouldn't in any case). You have three meals a day using the foods you can eat in reasonable portions (eat until you are satisfied but not stuffed - you're never supposed to be starving) and you can snack on most fruits and veggies in between.

I find it works great for me because I hate the counting points and stuff and, frankly, I'm basically an all or nothing kind of guy so I like the idea of 'just don't eat this food dummy'. There is a little leeway for when I'm having a bad day, but otherwise I try to stick to it.

I don't want to sound like I'm advocating Weight Watchers or anything though. I find it works for me because I need the discipline of being weighed every week and being embarassed in public when I'm up! It does cost money to join and you pay every week until you reach your goal weight, but it's easy enough to get your hands on the materials if you just want to do it at home yourself for free.

As for the health issues and restrictive diet aspect: I HAD (yay, past tense) gallstones and was getting regular and severe attacks and I found that exercise exacerbated it and of course certain foods (though I wasn't eating much fatty food anyway) too. The reason that I have them no more is that I got the whole damn gallbladder yanked out in an operation last week :hurray:

The operation though has slowed me down a little. Nothing strenuous for a while. So between that and a going away party for a friend who's moving to China I was up a lb at tonight's weigh in :blush5: I don't feel too bad though as I know it's because of lack of exercise and water retention from alcohol and I feel confident that I'll be back down next week.

Thanks for the interest everyone. I intend to set up a journal - I can see it sitting there at the end of a very long finger - but I want to get some during pictures to put in it too and will probably wait until I have them. I've spent so long avoiding cameras that now I can't get my picture taken. But I will get around to it!

Best of luck to all of you.

Thanks for sharing and so glad you're doing so well. Glad you had your surgery with no complications as well...I bet it's a relief to not have the gallbladder attacks anymore. Can't wait to see you start a journal :)

Darn those gallstones!

Oh, Monkey - I had my gall bladder yanked out 2.5 years ago; and yes, you are down and out for a bit. I'm so sorry that you will learn soon enough that it takes much longer to get back into sit-ups or other abdominal exercises than anything else.

Well, good for you. No more bloody gallstones. Now you'll have acid reflux to look forward to! (I'm kidding - or at least I hope I am).

You'll be just fine. There's nothing wrong with a day or two here and there of alcohol-caused water retention. I hope you spent good, quality time with your friend before s/he leaves for the Far East.

Thanks for sharing. Give it another week and you'll be almost back to normal (aside from those pesky incisions that seem to fall right where clothes tend to rub).

Be well, you're doing super great (and I may look into the Weight Watchers - I didn't know they had anything other than the Points program).

Best,
Tarazan :Angel_anim:

Thanks for the encouragement.

Yeah, I feel great now, especially not having to worry about having attacks! But I'm only hoping my weight gain this week was because of alcohol related water retention, I have a very weird feeling like my metabolism has slowed waaay down since the op. More so than just because of the lack of strenuous exercise.

Oh well though, probably just me being paranoid and super sensitive to my body post-op.

As for the incisions! At night when I sleep is the worst! I go to turn over in my sleep and my skin pinches one of them and suddenly I'm wide awake!

I know it's a cliché, but in my case I can really say, 'every day in every way I'm getting better and better'. Well maybe not every way, but I'm definitely feeling stronger every day :D.

That's an interesting thought - post-op weight gain. I, of course, had post-op weight gain but I have just about post-anything weight gain. I was able to lose 20 lbs back in February, so I don't think I can correlate the two, myself.

My sister just had her gall bladder out in late 2007 and I've recently heard that she is having weight problems since (she has a lot of room to spare, though, unlike me). She did mention that she is able to eat so much more comfortably that she is probably just eating more (?? I didn't have problems eating pre-op, just attacks at night. She didn't have attacks, her issue seemed different than mine).

I'm not trying to dishearten you, just share. I haven't read all your posts so I don't know what you may or may not be doing for exercise but there are a lot of suggestions for people who hit plateaus that may work just the same (who knows, it's worth a shot, right?). If you're not already, try interval training (walk/run, etc.) or change the foods you eat. You know, they say your body gets used to what you eat. I eat 3 egg whites plus one whole egg, 1/4 cup (dry) whole oatmeal and 1 small banana for breakfast almost every day. Is that a good, healthy breakfast? Sure. Is it causing some weird metabolism plateau? Who knows, maybe.

I see you've lost a bunch of weigh already. I don't know how long you've been at it but it seems to me you're doing everything right. I, with you, will hope your recent gain is a water retention sort of thing. It certainly does happen! Keep me posted!

Best,
Tarazan :Angel_anim:

Thanks again for the encouragement.

I, of course, had post-op weight gain but I have just about post-anything weight gain.

Lol!

As for the plateau thing. I'm not sure it's a plateau per se. Just more of a feeling of my metabolism having slowed. Just the thought that it's suddenly become harder fills me with dread! But as I said, it's probably because I'm hyper-sensitive to my body post-op, so I'm not really worried.

No exercise at the moment, but hope to be back at it next week. Usually gym 3 times a week for an hour to an hour and a half. Also some walking because I don't drive.

Good to hear that both you and your sister are feeling well since the operations and I definitely think that since you were able to lose 20lbs back in February that you will do great now, especially with the help of the people on this forum.

my mum had her gallbladder taken out due to stones also, the stone was way too big.

anyway, it was also a blessing, cause she lost so much weight post op that she is now so slim. she lost around 30 kg in 3 mths
