Hi, I'm new to the forum. At this stage I don't need to loose alot of weight because I walk alot, and I do mean alot. Although I am active regularly I eat horrible because I'm going though a very hard financial situation for the past two years. When I am hungry I tend to buy a bag of cookies or coffee cake and eat most of it, and that's it for my dinner because it's cheap, and I don't know how to cook. I use to buy (2) bags of cookies, I realized that it's a little to much, although I still do at times. I'm a vegetarian, with a bad sweet tooth, and I don't drink milk either only Soy or Almond Milk, or water which has probably helped. The area I don't like the most is my top half, unfortunately I inherited a mix bag on the lower part of my body and I know how to work on that. I don't know how to fix the top part, I don't have a hanging gut but could be toned. There are areas around my top half that you can grab the fat, it's not extreme but you can. I want to stop eating refined sugar soon, I want to ease out of it. What type of foods are recommended to get good sugars without the actual sugar ? I also want to know what energy foods there are for the mind and body, for times when I'm not active or need energy boost, without all those false Red Bulls and Monsters (which I don't drink) and of course Refined sugars. Eating junk and sitting is even a worse recipe then eating junk and walking or jogging 2.5 miles.

1: Start learning how to cook, it can be a very enjoyable process (if sometimes hectic and frustrating) but usually rewarding.

Have a search and you'll find plenty of instructional videos on slicing vegetables, boiling rice, seasoning pans, scrambling an egg and stir frying vegetables. do that and you have yourself a meal already.

2: last I checked, soy and almond milk wasn't appreciably healthier than skim milk, (and even full fat isn't awful in moderation)

3: for upper body exercises try pushups, dips, curls, pull ups, etc. "You are your own gym" is an interesting read that gives lots of bodyweight exercise suggestions.

4: have a look at stevia based products, it's a natural sweetener but far lower calorie than sugar.

5: oily fish are great for the mind and body (dunno if you choose to eat fish though), Nuts are also great energy food.
