just wanted to drop a note and introduce myself! I am a 34 year old mom of 2. Marshall who is 3 and Mackenzie who is 3 months. I am exclusively breastfeeding but STILL can't lose weight. I teach first grade and I love to eat! that is my biggest problem... I will sneak and eat... I will eat 2 helpings when I can.. I even worry if there will be enough to eat. I don't think I am finished until I am miserable. I quit smoking a year ago and that has not helped. I was a thin child, an active and thin teen, and started to gain in college. It has yo-yoed from there. I hope with the support of this site and my co-workers (we have a little "Biggest Loser" group going starting Monday!) I will get healthy again.

Hi Tracy!!

Congratulations on your little bundle of joy there :) I think your loving to eat can actually help you to lose weight...you just have to start eating the right things. I find that when I eat like 5 - 6 times a day and eat healthy small meals, I lose weight rather quickly. There is a post on this forum from a well known trainer that references that you need to do this to speed up your metabolism, so your problem may well be your answer. Of course there is much more to it than that, and I am no professional, I have 144lbs to lose myself, but I am sure that you will find something that works marvellously for you.

Interesting point that you bring up about breastfeeding...I have seen another thread like that "breastfeeding and i still cannot lose weight." I do not have children yet, but was doing some research on breastfeeding and breast pumping. It actually said that the more you pump or feed is the quicker your body will produce milk. And even if you are not over feeding, your body will still (of course) produce more milk to feed the dear ones. I am not quite sure where the body draws the fat from though, and maybe that is why many think they will lose weight when they breast feed.

In light of all that, I do wish you the best and sincerely hope that you achieve your goals this year!

I am exclusively breastfeeding but STILL can't lose weight.

Breastfeeding burns 300-500 calories a day; it's not a magic weight-loss tool. You still need to be eating less than you burn if you want to lose.

I would caution you not to cut your calories back too much until you know how your milk supply reacts.

One of my online friends followed (successfully) these guidelines for losing weight (which she got from somewhere else, but I don't have a source handy), and I find they work well for me, at least so far:
0. Fix your head. What works about being fat for you? Face the benefits and give them up if you want to be slender.
1. Eat less.
2. Exercise more.
3. Repeat
4. Forever.
