Hello & Help

Lauran

New member
Hello everyone. I am new to this forum so just wanted to say hello and see if you guys have any helpful advice/tips for me.

I am 29 year old female, 168cm tall and currently weigh 158lbs. I am wanting to loose around 33lbs and improve my fitness.

Exercise wise, i am doing:
1 hour walking a day
30 mins weight training a day (arms/back/shoulders one day and legs the next etc)
Yoga approx every second day for 30 minutes

Food:
Mostly fresh fruits & vegetables, chicken, lean beef whole grains (cereal & small amount of bread)

My problem with food is mostly carbs, i love my pasta, rice & breads but have completly cut these out now with only the occasional 1/2 cup brown rice or sandwich with wholegrain bread. If i feel i need pasta i have wholewheat pasta with flak seed oil but this is only on the rare occasion. I am trying to limit my calories to between 1000 - 1300 per day.

Just wanting some feedback to see if i am on the right track as i am fairly new to this.

Thanks! :seeya:

Sounds like you are on the right track, how are you feeling cutting out almost all carbs???????

Why no carbs?

Why that calorie intake?

Have you read the stickies?

What does your weight training specifically look like?

Lauran hi,

Thought I'd throw in a little input. Seems you're may be eating the right foods
but we don't know how much you're eating. Also your matablism may be
slow and sometimes the best way to speed it up is eat more often. If you
are only eating 3 times a day increase your eating to 5 or 6 small meals a
day. I know it is hard because it feel like all you are doing is eating.

How intense is your exercise. Maybe you need to speed it up somewhat
and maybe increase the time to say, 45 minutes. You may want to make
the increase slowly adding a few minutes a day.

One thing to remember, Rome wasn't built in a day, Usually anything
worthwhile takes time. Just keep going, adding a little more effort each day
and one day you will look in the mirror and there looking back at you will
be a slim trim beautiful woman.

She states how many calories she is eating.

That is false.

Steve,

She states how many calories she is eating.

Lauran says, she “tries” to stay within 1000 to 1300 calories. I tried to run a marathon once but I didn't make it. How do you know she accomplishes what she tries.

That is false.

Ok, just for arguments sake let suppose "Also your metabolism may be slow and sometimes the best way to speed it up is eat more often. If you are only eating 3 times a day increase your eating to 5 or 6 small meals a day. I know it is hard because it feel like all you are doing is eating." - is false

If you know what is right why didn’t you tell us.
Oh, OK, you are probably a Pro. I suppose that would mean you have a book
or some pills to sell so you aren't giving any information away.

That's the ways of Pros. I remember, I use to see some of them on the street corners selling their wares, and know what?? They wouldn't give away any samples either.

Here’s my take on the matter.

Metabolic is the rate your body (enzymes) breaks down the food and turns it into energy. There are several products on the market advertised to increase your Metabolism. Makes one wonder how so many people lived before all these products were discovered.

Your body produces the enzymes to break down the different foods. A problem is, when we eat more foods than the enzymes can break down, we have a lot of undigested foods in our intestines, mostly our colons.

Common sense will tell you, if you eat smaller meals, more often, the enzymes will be able to do their jobs more efficiently. Your intestines, colon, will empty out as they should, leaving a good clean place to live and work and everybody will get along just fine.

That is exactly why when you kick the crap out of someone they are easier to get along with.

If you know what is right why didn’t you tell us.

If you were a respectful member, you would've read and learned why it is false in the stickies before opening your trap.

Why repeat something that's been discussed to death here and is easily accessible in the stickies?

Oh, OK, you are probably a Pro.

Hmmm, do I make money with fitness?

Sure.

Does that make me a pro? I'd prefer not to be lumped into the same category of "professional trainers."

I suppose that would mean you have a book
or some pills to sell so you aren't giving any information away.

I wonder if you'll actually realize how off base you are with this comment.

Pro Tip: Read the stickies. I've put years of free advice into this community. I don't have a book. Nor do I sell pills.

That's the ways of Pros.

Let's be very clear here. I operate with the sole intent of maintaining the integrity of information on this forum. Your assumptions are comically incorrect.

You're accusing me of the very thing I despise and clean off this forum as a moderator.

I remember, I use to see some of them on the street corners selling their wares, and know what?? They wouldn't give away any samples either.

Yup.

That's me.

10s of thousands of posts here over years and years and all I do is sucker people out of their money.

You caught me red handed.

Here’s my take on the matter.

Great take.

Wrong.

But good for you for having a take.

I suggest you pick up a few text books and actually make an attempt of understanding the inner workings of the human body before engaging me in a conversation with the lack of tact you've used here.

That is exactly why when you kick the crap out of someone they are easier to get along with.

Sure.

WOW, seems as if i have opened a can of worms here. Just wanted a bit of helpful advice! Sorry if i am going over something that has been said 100 times before. As i said, i am new to this so i guess i might not know the basic stuff. Thanks anyway for the advice from both sides but i think i'll let you guys thrash it out from here on in and i'll go it alone!
Cheers.

No reason to take a side discussion that has nothing to do with you personally.

Why would you do that?

My suggestion to you is to read the stickies so you can build a foundation of knowledge. Once that's established, if you have specific questions, please ask.

Steve,

Lauran says, she “tries” to stay within 1000 to 1300 calories. I tried to run a marathon once but I didn't make it. How do you know she accomplishes what she tries.

Hi Lauran and welcome!
I don't know why Steve or Boomerang didn't address this- but aiming for 1000-1300 calories a day is quite low. Minimum is 1200, and even that is considered low.
Use the resources on this site, or google of course, to find out your bmr (or even check out sparkpeople.com or mydailyplate.com for some meal plans and caloric intake goals).

Boomerang is right in that if you're metabolism is screwed up, you'll have a harder time. If you've been, just for example, eating 1000 calories a day for awhile, then you're body will be in starvation mode and won't really be performing like it should if you want to start burning fat.

And yes, don't be afraid of carbs! Complex carbs are great and will give you the energy you need to stay active. Don't confuse healthy, complex carbs with processed "evil" carbs. Good carbs- Brown rice, couscous, quinoa, whole wheat pasta, whole grain breads, potatoes... just to name a few.

Since you said you were fairly new to this- keep checking out the site and also check out those others I recommended. I used to love sparkpeople, but now love mydailyplate. Though sparkpeople has a ton of great articles and motivation- a great way to get started and educate yourself. Plus, I find once you start writing down what you eat it helps to see where you can improve.

PS- your activity level sounds like a good starting point. Just ensure you're eating enough to sustain yourself. You also may want to look at your weight training routine. Don't forget recovery time. You said you were working different sets each day, but you may want to get a trainer or a good book/dvd to get the most out of weight training. 2-3 times a week of weight training is really all you need. How much are you lifting? Little dinky pink barbells or pushing your muscles? is a great site by the way.

You may want to introduce heavier cardio instead of just walking. Cycling, running, swimming, etc. Doing something that really moves your body and gets your heart pumping. Interval training is the bestest- look up hiit to find out more.

Hello and welcome. I am new here too, but I have a few words of advice for you:

- Try not to limit yourself to such a low calorie count per day. If you are going for walks and doing weight training, it is important to get in about 2000 calories per day. One of the best ways to lose weight is by turning it into muscle. The only way to generate muscle mass is by using excess calories to break down and reconstruct muscle fibers. For this you will also need protein in your diet which you will get from the chicken and lean beef. Many women have this misconception that if they eat 2000 calories a day and do weight training that they will become buff; however, this is rarely the case. As long as you don't start drinking 5 protein shakes a day and weight train for hours on end, you will only notice gradual toning throughout your body.

-It is interesting that you chose to walk rather than run, as it actually burns more calories/hour than running does. However, you have to be walking rather quickly for this to work. They say a "brisk" walking pace is best, so you should be able to move at around 4mph. Plan your walk so that you know how far you are going, see how long it takes and do a little calculation to find your average walking speed. If you find you are walking at around 4mph, then you are doing excellent, otherwise you might want to increase your speed.

-Finally, do not limit yourself to walking as being your only source of cardio. Your body will get used to it, it will become routine, and you will stop seeing results. Make sure to mix things up by doing things such as running, cycling, swimming, etc.

Good luck and keep me posted!

Didn't address?

You might want to read my first line of questioning to her that I'm still waiting on answers to.

Why no carbs?

Why that calorie intake?

Have you read the stickies?

What does your weight training specifically look like?
